Salary: $17.50 Hourly Location : City of Oconomowoc Job Type: Internship Job Number: FLEET2026INTERN1 Department: Fleet Department Opening Date: 03/09/2026 Closing Date: 3/30/2026 10:00 AM Central Description Excellent summer mechanic internship opportunity working for the City's Fleet Department! No weekends or evenings! Shift is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Start and end date flexible based on student's school schedule when feasible. Starting pay is $17.50/hour. Job Summary: This seasonal working internship provides entry-level support to the City's Fleet Department through hands-on vehicle and equipment maintenance, repair, and inspection tasks. Interns perform real shop work under close supervision, gaining practical experience in a professional fleet environment. Students with solid mechanical abilities may take on responsibilities that match their skill level as they develop. Examples of DutiesAssist mechanics with basic vehicle and equipment maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and lubrication. Support inspections of vehicles and equipment to identify needed repairs or worn components. Perform simple repairs under guidance, including tire services, battery replacement, minor electrical troubleshooting, and basic mechanical work. Help maintain shop cleanliness, tools, and equipment. Document maintenance tasks and parts usage in fleet maintenance systems as directed. Assist with inventory tasks, including parts pickup and organization. Safely operate light vehicles and equipment as required. Adhere to all shop safety procedures and use required PPE. Perform other related duties as assigned. Typical QualificationsRequirements: Minimum Age 18 years old. Students enrolled in automotive, diesel, or mechanical technology programs, with hands-on experience in these systems and shop or garage work preferred. Must be dependeable and able to report to work on time. Special Requirements: Good driving record. Valid state driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to start of job. Must possess and wear ankle high safety toe boots while at work. Supplemental InformationBasic understanding of vehicle and motorized systems (engines, brakes, electrical, hydraulics). Ability to use hand and power tools under supervision. Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Dependable, punctual, and committed to safety protocols. Experience with general labor or maintenance tasks. Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Physically capable of lifting, climbing, and operating equipment.
