Principal Legal Secretary City of San Diego $96,179.20 - $115,918.40 Annually City of San Diego, CA Varies by Position AG-T11808-202603 1211 - City Attorney 03/06/2026 3/16/2026 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana Job Information Principal Legal Secretary positions plan, direct, and coordinate, through subordinate supervisors, the day-to-day management and supervision of the legal support staff work units of the City Attorney's Office; select, train, and evaluate first and second-line subordinates' work performance; resolve personnel and disciplinary issues; make recommendations for legal support staff assignments to professional staff; monitor workload distribution; develop practices, procedures, and policies to increase work effectiveness; make recommendations to resolve organizational and procedural problems; handle sensitive and confidential communications on legal matters; act as the primary point of contact for members of the judicial branch, law enforcement, government officials and their staff, members of the public, and others who are trying to contact or schedule a meeting with the Assistant City Attorney or Chief of Prosecution Operations in the Criminal and Community Justice Divisions; act as a liaison to City departments to answer routine questions regarding legal procedures; act as a liaison between the City Clerk's Office and secretarial staff; redirect and track to completion all resolutions and ordinances; upload legislative documents produced by the City Attorney's Office to the City Clerk's website; research complex questions and provide information to attorneys; maintain and track all legislative documents for the annual City Attorney Opinion Books; maintain and track the drafting, routing, posting, and updating of Division Instructions; process legal documents; resolve personnel and disciplinary issues; and perform other duties as assigned. Notes: This vacancy may be responsible for assisting both the Assistant City Attorney and the Chief of Prosecution Operations. This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies. Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). Minimum Requirements You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply unless otherwise indicated. Experience: You must meet ONE of the following options: One year of full-time experience as a Senior Legal Secretary with the City of San Diego. Four years of full-time experience as a Legal Secretary in a law firm, corporate legal office, or public entity legal office. Legal Secretary experience must include one year of experience performing supervisory responsibilities equivalent to the City of San Diego classification of Senior Legal Secretary, a position that performs the full range of duties of a Legal Secretary: acts as a liaison between the City Attorney's office and court personnel; trains, supervises, and reviews the work of subordinate Legal Secretaries and other clerical personnel within a work unit; and evaluates the work performance of subordinates and initiates disciplinary action as required. Note: City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered. Highly desirable: Lead and/or supervisory experience. Possess strong writing skills and exceptional organizational skills. Be a practical problem-solver and team player; have good time management skills; and demonstrate effective communication and conflict resolution skills. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes, including a polygraph examination and/or background investigation.
