Currently, there are 10 beds available for patient care. Ratios depend on patient acuity: ICU patients 1:2, PCU patients 1:4, MST patients 1:5-6. If no nurse aide is available, RNs will provide primary care with a ratio of 1:3. Common diagnoses include sepsis, suicide attempts, drug or alcohol withdrawal, COPD, respiratory arrest, pneumonia, COVID, DKA, and abnormal blood pressure or heart rate. Post-operative complications are also common. Non-titratable infusions are administered in the PCU for heart rate and blood pressure maintenance. RNs are required to titrate drips, specifically sedation, vasopressors, and insulin. The Charge RN manages a total of 50 inpatient beds across various units. Nurse aides will typically care for 10-15 patients. In the absence of a nurse aide, the RN may take on additional patients. Respiratory therapists will provide support for equipment such as vents, CPAP, and BiPAP. Remote monitor techs are present for PCU and MST patients, and RNs are responsible for reading strips. The ICU team must routinely monitor patients via bedside cardiac monitoring. Shifts will be scheduled as 12-hour blocks, either from 0700 to 1900 or 1930 to 0730. There is a weekend requirement with shifts every other weekend. Holiday shifts will be distributed fairly among staff. In cases of low census, staff will rotate standby duty. Floating to other units is expected, including care for adult patients in designated areas. Two hours' notice will be provided for any floating assignments. Scrubs may be of any color except for camouflage. Unit-specific orientation will be provided to ensure familiarity with procedures and protocols. The charting system utilized is Cerner.
