GENERAL SUMMARY: The Calibration & Repair Lab Technician is responsible for calibrating, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and reworking a variety of complex Measuring & Test Equipment (M&TE). This role applies metrology principles to ensure accuracy, traceability, and compliance with applicable quality and technical standards, including NQA-1, ISO/IEC 17025:2017, ISO 9001:2015, and ANSI/NCSL Z540.3. The position supports internal teams and customers by delivering timely, accurate calibration and repair services, maintaining documentation and traceability to NIST, and upholding lab environment and quality system requirements. Key Responsibilities:1. Calibration, Verification & Metrology Execution: • Perform calibrations and verifications on a broad range of M&TE, including (as qualified): electrical test equipment, temperature, pressure, hipots, relay test sets, high current test sets, and related industrial test equipment. • Use appropriate lab standards and instruments (e.g., Fluke 550xA, 5720A, multimeters, oscilloscopes, deadweight testers) and follow documented methods and specifications. • Ensure measurement traceability, correct application of tolerances, and proper handling of standards and accessories. 2. Troubleshooting, Repair & Rework: • Diagnose failures at the component and assembly level; perform repair, rework, and functional testing, including soldering and board-level repair where required. • Troubleshoot equipment with limited documentation or incomplete manufacturer data; identify failure modes and repair paths efficiently. • Conduct incoming inspections to verify accessories, documentation, and customer-reported symptoms/malfunctions. 3. Documentation, Systems & Traceability: • Prepare, review, and maintain calibration and repair documentation in designated systems (e.g., METTEAM/METCAL or equivalent). • Maintain complete records supporting ISO/IEC 17025 expectations, including as applicable: as-found/as-left results, traceability, and documented repair actions. • Support uncertainty-related documentation as assigned (e.g., uncertainty inputs, traceability chains, method references). 4. Quality System & Standards Compliance: • Execute work in alignment with NQA-1, ISO/IEC 17025:2017, ISO 9001:2015, ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and internal procedures. • Support internal and external audit readiness by maintaining records, following controlled procedures, and helping address corrective actions as assigned. • Balance quality requirements with on-time delivery expectations; escalate risks to quality or schedule appropriately. 5. Lab Operations & Continuous Improvement: • Monitor and help maintain lab environmental and workspace conditions suitable for metrology and calibration work. • Identify parts, consumables, and tools needed to support inventory levels and routine repairs; communicate needs to the Lab Manager. • Assist in developing/improving methods, processes, and procedures to increase consistency, accuracy, and throughput. 6. Team Coverage & Cross-Training: • Provide backup coverage for other lab functions during absences; demonstrate flexibility and willingness to learn additional calibration/repair disciplines. 7. Additional Responsibilities: • Perform other related duties as assigned to support business needs. • Continuously seek opportunities for professional development and contribute to team-wide learning and growth. Requirements Requirements (Education, Experience, Skills & Attributes): • Demonstrated experience diagnosing component-level failures and performing board-level repair and soldering. • Experience calibrating and repairing electrical and electronic test equipment. • Experience working with high-voltage systems and applying electrical safety protocols (including arc flash awareness). • Strong working knowledge of electrical and electronic principles, troubleshooting methods, and repair practices. • Familiarity with calibration principles including traceability, measurement integrity, and controlled documentation practices. • Ability to follow documented procedures and work within controlled quality systems. • High attention to detail with strong documentation habits and ability to maintain accurate records. • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound technical judgment. • Ability to balance quality requirements with on-time delivery expectations. • Strong organizational and time management skills. • Effective written and verbal communication skills. • Proficiency with standard business software and laboratory documentation systems. • High school diploma or GED. • Valid driver's license required; must be able to operate a company or personal vehicle for business purposes and meet all applicable company and client screening requirements based on job duties (e.g., motor vehicle record, background check, drug testing, or other applicable screenings). Preferred Qualifications: • Associate degree (2-year technical degree) in electronics, electrical technology, metrology, or related field. • 3-5 years of relevant calibration and/or repair experience in a commercial or military laboratory environment. • Military PMEL training (or equivalent). • Experience with METTEAM, METCAL, or similar calibration management systems. • Working knowledge of uncertainty analysis and measurement uncertainty concepts. • Experience supporting or working within ISO/IEC 17025:2017, ISO 9001:2015, ANSI/NCSL Z540-3, or NQA-1 quality programs. • Experience in the power/energy industry. • Experience calibrating and repairing hipots, relay test sets, high current test sets, temperature and pressure equipment. • Experience performing incoming inspections and verifying accessories and documentation. • Experience supporting internal or external audits. Physical Requirements: This position may involve a combination of indoor office work and outdoor field activities. The following physical demands are considered essential functions of the role: • Regularly lift, carry, and/or move up to 75 pounds. • Stand, walk, sit, climb ladders and staircases, and operate vehicles for extended periods. • Bend, stoop, crawl, and work in awkward positions or confined spaces for several hours. • Perform repetitive movements such as typing, tool use, or equipment handling. • Reach with hands and arms, including overhead and below waist level, to handle tools, materials, or controls.
