The City of Rochester seeks candidates for the position of Fire Fighter Paramedic in the Fire Department. Candidates with a paramedic license only may apply, and the City will consider sponsoring them through the Fire Academy. This is a full-time position. Shift selection is by union seniority. Fire Fighter Paramedics currently work 24-hour shifts. This position requires strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. The ideal applicant will also possess a positive attitude, exceptional customer service skills, a style that supports teamwork, collaboration and positive relationships. Salary: Fire Fighter/ Paramedic: $72,444 - $79,376 (DOQ w/highly competitive benefits package, including a defined contribution benefit). Safe and efficient operation of the fire equipment and apparatus. 2. Responding to fires, rescue, first-aid, hazardous materials incidents, and other related emergencies.3. Participating in fire safety inspections.4. Performing routine maintenance on fire stations, grounds, and equipment.5. Participating in training activities, and other related work as required.6. Accurate and diligent completion of all forms required and associated with the function of the position of the firefighter.7. Conducting themselves with integrity and honor.B. The firefighter is expected to:1. Maintain a positive work attitude.2. Maintain a neat and well-groomed appearance at all times.3. Conduct themselves as a public servant with honesty, integrity and compassion. Essential Job FunctionsJob functions are determined by the Fire Chief and may include but not limited to the following.A. A firefighter Shall:1. Respond to emergencies by driving apparatus, lifting, connecting, and controlling hose lines and nozzles; turning water on and off, erecting and climbing ladders and working at heights above one story; operating extinguishers, axes, pike poles, life lines and other equipment.2. Understand and operate within the National incident management system (NIMS).3. Operate fire engine pumps and portable fire equipment.4. Respond to emergencies as a member of a team and individually participate in the control and suppression of all types of fire and hazardous conditions.5. Participate in rescue operations at fire scenes, accidents, hazardous areas, and other emergency situations.6. Participate in rendering emergency medical care.7. Participate in assisting other agencies in emergencies.8. Participate in fire prevention inspections; notify building residents and direct supervisors of the fire hazards and possible corrective actions.9. Participate in National Fire prevention Week activities.10. Participate in pre-incident plans.11. Participate in continuous training programs and maintain proper certification.12. Participate in salvage and overhaul operations, using salvage covers, brooms mops, shovels, and similar equipment assuring the fire is completely extinguished, identification of fire causes, preserve evidence and testify in court.13. Participate in routine cleaning and maintenance of fire station facilities, grounds, equipment and fire hydrants.14. Conduct classes and presentations for fire personnel and public groups on a variety of subjects, such as fire prevention, firefighting, first-aid and rescue, HazMat and other related subjects.15. Attend EMS and other related schools as required.16. Prepare a variety of reports, data, and written materials.17. Answer telephone and radio communications.18. Perform related work as required.19. Maintain proper certification.20. Prepares meals and washes dishes; collects money and enters payments into journal.Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesA. A firefighter must have:1. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.2. Ability to work as a team.3. Ability to drive fire apparatus.4. Ability to work under extreme pressure.5. Ability to work with and render first- aid to sick and injured persons.6. Ability to effectively perform work of hazardous nature under adverse conditions.7. Ability to maintain physical fitness, agility, and mental alertness during extended periods of time.8. Ability to learn street locations, block numbers, building locations, target hazardous of the city.9. Ability to work with the public.10. Computer literate, and competent in use the of department and City software.B. Additional Requirements that can be completed on the job:1. NIMS - 100, 700, 800, 300, 400Qualifications1. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent;2. State of Michigan Firefighter II Certificate.3. State of Michigan AEMT or National Registry AEMT certificate at time of hire;4. Valid Mich. Operator's license with safe driving record.5. No record of criminal conviction.6. Physical condition appropriate for the position.7. Shall, if formerly a member of any branch of the United States Armed Services produces his honorable discharge papers.8.
