Assistant ControllerDenver, CO (ApplyDescriptionThe Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of a nonprofit organization, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable federal, state, and grantor requirements. This role plays a critical leadership function in month-end close, grant accounting, audit coordination, budgeting, and the development of accounting staff. The Assistant Controller partners closely with the Grant Accountants and program leadership to support sound financial management in service of the organization’s mission. The ideal candidate is a nimble, independent accounting professional with strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and the flexibility to support the organization wherever needed.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES·Accounting Operations & Closeo Support timely and efficient monthly close processes, including balance sheet reconciliations and general ledger analysiso Review, prepare, and post journal entrieso Cross-train on all accounting processes and provide backup support to Controller and staff· Grant Accountingo Oversee grant accounting and reporting for federal, state, local, and private funding sourceso Partner with Grant Accountants to monitor grant burn rates, allowable costs, and budget compliance in accordance with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) and grant agreementso Review and support grant billings, draw requests, closeouts, and required financial reports· Financial Reporting, Budgeting & Analysiso Assist with budget development and ongoing financial analysiso Prepare and review operating budget reports, including variance analysis and department-level reportingo Partner with Grant Accountants, program and department leaders to provide financial guidance, budget-to-actual analysis, and expenditure monitoringo Provide ad hoc analysis and financial reports as requested· Audit Compliance & Reportingo Coordinate and support the annual financial audit and Single Audit, including preparation of schedules, workpapers, and auditor responseso Prepare IRS Form 990o Assist the Controller in ensuring financial and accounting policies and internal controls comply with GAAP, GAAS, Office of Management and Budget (OMB) requirements, and applicable federal and state regulationso Support oversight of grant financial management and complianceo Support preparation of compliance related schedules and filings as assigned (e.g., Single Audit schedules, property tax exemptions).· Policies, Processes & Internal Controlso Support the maintenance and continuous improvement of accounting systems and workflows, including implementation of process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.o Develop, recommend, and validate financial and accounting policies and internal controls to drive compliance, consistency, and accuracyo Ensure policies and procedures are documented and kept current under the supervision of the Controller· Asset & Systems Managemento Supervise procurement and inventory of fixed assets, including reconciliation of purchases and disposalso Ensure inventory disposal is conducted and documented in accordance with grantor policies and procedureso Participate in accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking, grant accounting, and fixed assets· Training & Organizational Supporto Assist with the development and delivery of financial training for the broader organizationo Perform other duties and special projects as assignedPOSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORKFull timeMonday-Friday 8AM-5PMLOCATION2660 Larimer St, Denver CO 80205 – On-site with potential for some WFH after 30 daysSALARY: $90,000-$100,000 annual exemptRequirementsCOMPETENCIES and SKILLS· Models core culture attributes of Volunteers of America Colorado Branch that include “AIRS” (Accountability, Integrity, Respect and Service)?· Models and pursues with vigor Volunteers of America Colorado Branch three critical virtues of HHS (Hungry, Humble, People Smart)· Self-motivated and directed· Strong understanding of the full accounting cycle· Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and judgment skills· Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word· Experience with Sage Intacct, Paylocity, and Stampli· Excellent working knowledge of accounting principles, including GAAP, GAAS, and OMB requirements· Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail· Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills· Ability to work effectively both independently and under supervision· Collaborative, proactive, and self-reliant approach to workMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, and at least three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experiencePREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION· Nonprofit/grant accounting experience· Public accounting or auditing experienceSalary Description90-100,000 annual
