Swimming Pool Lifeguard To perform supervision, maintenance, and skilled lifeguarding for the City's swimming pool. Illustrative examples of work include: Monitoring the activity of pool patrons of all ages; enforcing safety rules; warning patrons of violations and may remove patrons for repeated violations Performing rescue and applying first aid in emergencies; contacting fire or emergency medical personnel as required for additional support Maintaining records and statistics of participants and activities for various aquatic programs Participating in the maintenance of the swimming pool by monitoring and maintaining pool filtration system; conducting periodic testing of pool water chemistry and adjusting chemicals as needed to maintain standards Performing miscellaneous duties such as answering the telephone, running errands, picking up supplies for activities, conducting classes, selling concessions, collecting fees, and helping set up for classes or events Cleaning bathrooms, facilities, shelter, office, pool and concession stand Conducting and/or assisting in the teaching of swimming lessons, which would include: testing of program participants for swimming skill levels; certifies skill level of participants for more advanced classes, ability to use pool diving board, and other aquatic functions as needed Conducting and/or assisting with Water Aerobics Performing duties as needed related to opening and closing of pool facilities Performing related tasks as required Knowledge, skills, and abilities include: Knowledge of and ability to practice/use the principles and practices of first aid, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), dealing with hazardous materials, and swimming and lifesaving techniques Knowledge of tools and products used to clean bathrooms, facilities, and other buildings Knowledge of state rules and regulations affecting the operation and safety of swimming pool and safety of pool patrons Knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in comprehensive aquatics program. Ability to use various tools, chemicals, and equipment to maintain the usability and safety of the swimming pool; ability to test water and add chemicals to maintain water quality standards Ability to teach swimming lessons to all age groups Ability to enforce safety and health regulations relating to swimming pool operations Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the general public Ability to communicate effectively with pool patrons; ability to enforce pool rules with firmness and resolve Ability to give and understand oral and written instructions Physical requirements include: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to run, swim, walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and their hands and arms to reach. The employee is frequently required to climb up or down from an observation tower. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees are encouraged to remain fit in the event of a quick response to an emergency situation. Working conditions include: Work in this class is performed primarily in an outdoor setting with frequent exposure to the rays of the sun, wind, and exposure to chlorine conditions. Employee is also exposed to potential injury related to swimming pool lifeguarding hazards. Employees are exposed to the potential of coming into contact with blood borne pathogens in the course of rescue and lifesaving work and are required to wear specialized personal equipment (e.g., gloves, masks, etc.) Education and experience: Preference may be given to a high school graduate and/or a person with 1-2 years pool lifeguard experience Special requirements: Valid North Carolina driver's license may be required to operate City vehicles At least 15 years of age Certified in CPR, first aid, AED certification, and by the American Red Cross Life Guard Training (or equivalent certification) Possession of Water Safety Instructor, Water Safety Aide, or Basic Swimming Instructor is preferred.
