Detentions Information Assistant Are you interested in working with law enforcement in a detention facility? Does your employment background include excellent customer service skills and cash-handling experience? This position is eligible for appointment at step 1, $51,188.80 annually. County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5. Future salary increases are available as follows: June 26, 2026 - 4.33% increase to base pay (3.50% Across-the-Board + 0.83% Market Increase); June 25, 2027 - 3.83% increase to base pay (3.00% Across-the-Board + 0.83% Market Increase). The following additional pay incentives and premiums are available: $.50/hour Work Location Premium (Assigned to work in a locked facility in the Sheriff's Office as primary work location). The San Diego County Sheriff's Office is recruiting individuals with strong customer service and multitasking skills who can work independently and in a team environment to be a Detentions Information Assistant. Incumbents serve as an information source to the public, law enforcement, and attorneys regarding incarcerated persons of the County jail or juvenile wards of a detention or camp facility. They schedule visits and property exchanges, perform cashiering duties, and other customer service-related work. Incumbents work in a locked detention facility that is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Applicants must be willing to work any and rotating shifts, on holidays or weekends. In addition, you may be eligible for the following premiums: Training premium of one dollar and forty-five cents ($1.45) per hour; Third (graveyard) shift differential of eighty cents ($0.80) per hour. The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below: Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening. Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results. Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date If you are not selected for this interview process, you may have the opportunity to compete for future vacancies. Education and Experience: Twelve (12) months of full-time, progressively responsible clerical experience; OR, Three (3) months of the above experience and completion of an administrative, office, or front desk certification program from a recognized community or business college. Working Conditions: Incumbents work in a locked detention facility that is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Assigned functions are rotated and in most assignments, the employee can sit or stand, as desired, to perform the job. Applicants must be willing to work any shift, on holidays or weekends, based on assignment, with inebriated, uncooperative, and/or emotionally disturbed persons; and in a locked detention facility. Felony convictions may be disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test. The Department of Human Resources will remove personally identifiable information from all new recruitments. This practice, called Blind Applicant Screening, will hide a candidate's personal information that could influence or bias a hiring decision. Personal information includes name, phone number, address, gender, age, and race. The most highly qualified candidates, based on the evaluation results, will be referred for an interview.
