Position Type: SCHOOL SUPPORT (NON-INSTRUCTIONAL)/REGISTRAR Date Posted: 3/10/2026 Location: Douglass High School POSITION SUMMARY The Attendance Specialist monitors school attendance and works with school administrators, students, parents, and the school support team with a focus on keeping students in school, improving student and school attendance rates and educating staff and families. The position will work closely with teachers to ensure attendance is appropriately taken and reported to the office. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION: • Bachelor's Degree in counseling, social work, psychology, education or related field required. CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: • Valid Georgia Teacher or Leader certification or social work license preferred. WORK EXPERIENCE: • 5 years of related work experience in a similar role/setting required. • Must have some experience in providing services to school aged children and/or families, preferably in an urban setting. ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Monitors and implements strategies to improve daily student attendance. • Responsible for monitoring and improving teacher-take attendance percentages. • Analyzes data to identify student absentee patterns. • Serves as a liaison between the school and the community to increase student attendance rates • Provides targeted follow-up with parents/guardians to mitigate issues impacting attendance. • Serves as a school representative with the court system in reference to student attendance and attends Judicial Court in attendance cases. • Develops partnership with APS Truancy Sweep Unit. • Works with the school social worker to increase student attendance. • Understands and directs school personnel according to APS Attendance Policy. • Administers and supports the local and state attendance policies, including the Georgia Compulsory Attendance Policy. • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours and as needed. • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative. Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis. Incumbent may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict. Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors. Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records.
