As an Industrial Mechanic, you'll step into a key role that ensures the operational reliability of a complex, county-wide wastewater system-including four treatment plants and numerous pump and lift stations. Your mechanical expertise will directly support the health of our communities and the protection of the natural environment that makes Kitsap County so unique. As an Industrial Mechanic, you will: Perform advanced corrective maintenance on complex wastewater systems, conducting major overhauls on pumps, valves, gear mechanisms, motors, generators, and specialized equipment including odor control systems, grit/solids removal, clarifiers, aeration systems, solids thickening and dewatering equipment, gas scrubbers, UV and chlorine disinfection systems, and anaerobic digestion facilities Execute comprehensive preventative maintenance programs across all four wastewater treatment plants and associated pump/lift stations, maintaining pumps, valves, motors, generators, and the full spectrum of treatment process equipment while ensuring coating systems integrity and facility grounds maintenance Operate specialized equipment with expert proficiency, including electric and hydraulic crane trucks for equipment lifting, milling machines, lathes, MIG and TIG welders, oxygen welders, portable and fixed generators, and a comprehensive range of hand and power tools Leverage technology for operational excellence, utilizing manual and computer-based preventative maintenance programs to document maintenance activities, generate work orders, prioritize repairs, improve operational efficiencies, and troubleshoot mechanical irregularities Serve as a subject matter expert in mechanical systems, providing technical guidance on equipment selection, repair strategies, and system optimization across the utility's wastewater infrastructure Demonstrate machine shop mastery, properly operating shop equipment and applying knowledge of different metal types for fabrication, repair, and maintenance activities Provide limited leadership when assigned to lead positions for shifts or crews after completing appropriate training Wages Technician: $27.72 - $35.45 Specialist: $33.96 - $43.44 Automatic Progression RequirementsEmployees hired at the Technician level may be eligible for automatic progression to Industrial Mechanic upon successful completion of all required training, time-in-position, and certifications as outlined in the Utility Workbook. What You Bring: Professional Experience: Depending on your experience, you may be hired as a: Technician: One year of experience as a maintenance mechanic, performing welding, fabrication, maintenance and repair of equipment and pumps, or related If hired as a Technician, you will receive training to develop the skills and experience necessary to automatically progress to the Industrial Mechanic level. Progression will depend upon completing the requirements outlined in the Utilities Workbook which include meeting performance standards, completing all training and certification requirements, and meeting time in position requirements. Failure to Progress: Employees who fail to obtain required certifications, licenses, or credentials, or who do not consistently demonstrate required performance and competencies, will not progress to the next classification. The department will take appropriate personnel action in accordance with county policies. Industrial Mechanic: Three years of experience as a maintenance mechanic, performing welding, fabrication, maintenance and repair of equipment and pumps, or related experience. If hired as an Industrial Mechanic, you are expected to perform a full range of skilled mechanical duties with minimal supervision, drawing on your prior experience to maintain and troubleshoot complex systems and equipment. Technical Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in operating milling machines, lathes, drill presses, MIG/TIG welding equipment, and plasma cutters; knowledge of working with different types of metals and machine shop operations; ability to troubleshoot and perform major overhauls on complex mechanical systems Specialized Equipment Knowledge: Experience maintaining and repairing wastewater treatment equipment including pumps, clarifiers, blowers, boilers, sodium hypochlorite systems, scrubbers, rotary drum thickeners, gravity belt thickeners, rotary bar screens, and associated gasoline, propane, and diesel-powered generators and machinery Computer Systems Proficiency: Ability to operate computer-based preventative maintenance systems to document work, generate orders, and improve operational tracking and efficiency Safety and Quality Focus: Commitment to promoting good safety practices and procedures, maintaining clean work areas, and delivering high-quality maintenance outcomes with minimal oversight Equipment Operation: Capability to operate electric and hydraulic crane trucks, shop trucks, portable generators, pumps, and perform general maintenance on tools and equipment Preferred Qualifications: Experience as a maintenance mechanic at a wastewater treatment or water treatment plant, providing familiarity with the unique operational requirements and regulatory environment of utility infrastructure Within one year of employment, must obtain (and maintain during employment) the following licenses and certifications: Washington State First Aid/CPR certification Washington State Traffic Flagging Certification Possess a valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the operation of related equipment with Endorsement N and air brake restriction removed. Per the agreement with Kitsap County, selected employee and the appropriate bargaining unit, Kitsap County will fund the costs of tuition and certain educational expenses (tuition payments) and advance the costs of CDL Licensing fees. No relevant education or experience. 07 A valid CDL (with Endorsement N or X and air brake restriction removed) and medical certification is required within 12 months of employment. At that time, you will be entered into the random drug and alcohol testing pool, must authorize a pre-employment query in the FMCSA Clearinghouse, and complete a DOT drug test prior to operating a commercial vehicle on behalf of the County. If you already possess a valid CDL, these steps must be completed prior to employment.
