Overview At PNNL, our primary capabilities are organized into major departments known as Directorates, each focused on specific scientific research or functional areas and supported by dedicated leadership teams and budgets. The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division, part of the Energy and Environment Directorate, is driving the transition to a secure, resilient, and efficient energy system through both fundamental and applied research. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is looking for a highly skilled cybersecurity researcher experienced in operational power systems to enhance the security and resilience of the nation's electricity infrastructure. You will play a pivotal role in research related to secure communications, OT/ICS security, and cyber analytics for the grid, helping to deliver innovative methods and tools that strengthen real-time operations and situational awareness for utilities and system operators. Responsibilities Conduct both fundamental and applied research in cybersecurity, developing theories, techniques, and methods to enhance secure computing and cyber resiliency. Lead research initiatives in grid cybersecurity, implementing strategies and tools to prevent unauthorized access and detect operational anomalies. Perform system assessments to identify potential failure modes within critical infrastructure supporting national lifeline sectors. Design and validate cyber-resilient operational approaches for SCADA, EMS, DMS, protection & control, and grid-edge devices. Incorporate AI/ML and advanced modeling into workflows for detection, response, and recovery to strengthen physical-cyber resilience. Foster collaboration with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, telecom providers, and regulatory bodies to promote standards and industry adoption. Publish and present research findings, creating documentation aimed at accelerating deployment by operational stakeholders. Engage with industry professionals, translating complex cyber-physical concepts for various stakeholders. This position supports the Energy Systems Resiliency (ESR) Group within PNNL's EIBD. The role is primarily virtual but requires frequent travel to Richland, WA, based on program needs and sponsor requirements. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR- PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications: In-depth knowledge of Operational Technology (OT)/Industrial Control Systems (ICS), cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure protection. Experience in architecting hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbeds with SCADA integration for resilience testing. Demonstrated leadership in managing complex R&D programs and coordinating large, distributed technical teams. Strong foundation in power system operations, control theory, and the use of advanced analytics in decision support. Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance, including a thorough background investigation. U.S. Citizenship is required. Applicants will undergo a Federal background investigation. Pre-employment drug testing and random drug testing post-employment are mandatory for this position.
