The Senior Electrical Design Engineer is tasked with designing the electrical infrastructure for our energy conservation initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of power distribution as well as Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) relating to high-performance buildings across various sectors, including commercial, local and state governments, light industrial, educational, and healthcare facilities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Proven experience in electric building design. Design electrical systems for upgrades and improvements aimed at increasing energy efficiency. Achieve a comprehensive understanding of power distribution and its interconnection to the Utility Grid, from Service Entrance down to end-use receptacles. Advanced knowledge of energy conservation guidelines, including IECC, Title 24, and LEED Certification projects. Fundamentals of Power Distribution. Advanced knowledge of electrical theory involving 3-phase and 1-phase power, the power triangle and power factor, grounding principles, and magnetism applied to transformers and motors. Perform complex engineering calculations and analysis. In-depth understanding of engineering software and applications used in Electrical Engineering (e.g., SKM, ETAP, CYME, Excel tools). Expertise in stand-by power and alternative energy sources. Size combustion generators for high-performance buildings and their electrical distribution systems, including automatic transfer switches. Experience in integrating DER components such as PV, BESS, and EV charging is highly valued. Familiarity with microgrid design is a plus. Strong understanding of utility interconnection requirements. Design the electrical infrastructure and protective relays needed for on-site generation. Collaborate with the DER team to facilitate utility documentation and interconnection processes. Exceptional time management skills. Ability to manage multiple projects of varying complexities concurrently across different geographical regions and under minimal supervision. Prioritize workflow effectively. Capable of managing project timelines to meet deadlines with minimal oversight, ensuring quality, accuracy, and budget adherence. Collaborate seamlessly within design teams. Meet project goals in a cooperative environment, engaging with local agencies to ensure compliance with relevant codes and regulations. Innovative mindset. Leverage creativity to explore new technologies and solutions. Support design team efforts in identifying, recommending, and implementing new technologies to enhance organizational processes. Develop cost-effective solutions without compromising quality or reliability. Capability to conduct research on new concepts and technologies and integrate findings into our projects. A comprehensive approach from start to finish. Develop concepts based on site visits, produce construction drawings (CDs) using CAD software, and oversee the process through to permitting and construction support. Strong communication skills. Must articulate ideas clearly through excellent verbal and written communication. Comfortable presenting to clients, colleagues, and leadership. Willingness to travel occasionally (~15%) for site visits to document existing infrastructure and provide engineering evaluations, audits, and construction support as needed. Job Requirements / Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Building Science from an accredited ABET program. PE License is required. 8+ years of experience in electrical design for commercial, educational, governmental, or light industrial projects, typically in an MEP consulting environment. Advanced understanding of low voltage systems (600V and lower) including 480/277V, 208/120V, and 240/120V, with a bonus for medium voltage experience. Capable of performing engineering calculations including fault current studies, arc flash analysis, selective coordination studies, service entrance calculations, transformer sizing, and overcurrent protection analysis. Knowledge of applicable building codes and standards such as IEEE, NFPA, NEC (NFPA 70), California Electric Code (CEC), Title 24, UL Listings, and OSHA. Technical expertise in grounding and bonding. Extensive product knowledge of leading manufacturers (e.g., Eaton, Schneider, ABB, Siemens). Ability to size and specify distribution equipment including diesel generators, electrical switchgear, and panelboards. Proficient in assembling and compiling Division 26 specifications. Strong ownership of projects, from initial site assessment to final design completion and construction oversight. Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit experience is a plus. Skilled in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Teams; familiar with Bluebeam Revu. Genuine interest in professional development and career advancement.
