Gardner-Webb University is seeking to fill the position of Maintenance Technician - Plumber. The Maintenance Technician - Plumber is a vital member of the campus operations team, responsible for ensuring the reliability and safety of college infrastructure. While this role requires a versatile "multicraft" skillset, the primary focus is the expert maintenance, installation, and repair of campus-wide plumbing systems. As a mid-level professional, you will handle complex repairs, lead plumbing-specific projects, and provide technical support across various trades to keep the learning environment running smoothly. Key Responsibilities Lead Plumbing Maintenance: Serve as the primary technical expert for the installation and repair of all domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and natural gas piping systems across campus. System Diagnostics & Repair: Troubleshoot and fix complex commercial fixtures, including high-capacity water heaters, backflow preventers, industrial pumps, and laboratory-specific plumbing equipment. Code Compliance: Ensure all plumbing work meets local and state building codes; perform regular testing of safety systems such as emergency eye-wash stations and fire suppression lines. Multidisciplinary Support: Apply a working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems to assist with HVAC unit maintenance (filter and belt changes) and minor electrical repairs (replacing ballasts, switches, or small motors). Preventative Maintenance & Documentation: Conduct routine system inspections to identify potential failures. Use the campus CMMS to log work orders, track material usage, and update asset histories. Emergency Response: Act as a first responder for facilities emergencies, taking the lead on containing water leaks, pipe bursts, or sewer backups to minimize property damage. Required Skills & Qualifications Experience: 4-7 years of professional experience in plumbing and general facilities maintenance, preferably in a commercial, hospital, or educational setting. Plumbing Expertise: Advanced proficiency in reading blueprints and schematics; expert-level skill in working with various materials including PVC, copper, PEX, and cast iron. Technical Versatility: Proven ability to perform basic troubleshooting on HVAC mechanical components and low-voltage electrical circuits. Computer Literacy: Comfort using mobile devices for work-order management, email communication, and digital parts ordering. Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with students, faculty, and administration; must be a reliable team player with a high level of accountability. Work Environment & Physical Demands Ability to work in confined spaces (crawl spaces, mechanical tunnels) and climb ladders. Physical stamina to lift up to 50 lbs and remain on your feet for extended periods. Availability to participate in an "on-call" rotation for after-hours campus emergencies.
