Salary : $65,291.20 Annually Location : LOUISVILLE, KY Job Type: Full_Time Job Number: 15325 Department: Public Works Opening Date: 03/04/2026 Closing Date: 3/12/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Description Position will be part of the Public Works Team that reviews private development. Will work closely with the Office of Planning and the Land Development Code to prepare plans for preliminary approval. Duties would include construction plan review, issuing permits, and bond management. This position will be filled as an Engineer I/II/III based on candidate qualifications. Salary ranges are as follows. Engineer I - 62,192 - 99,257.60 Engineer II - 65,291.20 - 104,208 Engineer I Summary Objective: The purpose of this position is to review plans and specifications for proposed construction and development projects and recommends modifications for compliance with ordinances, regulations and engineering standards. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. Essential Functions: The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. • Reviews the engineering function of design, construction, testing and implementation of construction projects. • Plans and directs the construction of projects and facilities. • Designs and controls the operation and maintenance of facilities, devices, structures and equipment. • Reviews plans and specifications for proposed construction and projects, recommends modifications for compliance with building codes, regulations and engineering standards. • Inspects and evaluates sites and participates in the development of specifications and cost estimates. • Researches and develops solutions to engineering problems and to ensure compliance with building and engineering standards. • Analyzes and evaluates technical data and prepares technical reports. • Provides technical assistance and instruction. • Performs related work as assigned. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. PHYSICAL DEMANDSPhysical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES• Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Engineer II Summary Objective The purpose of this position is to review the engineering function of design, construction, testing and implementation of construction projects. Reviews and monitors engineering plans, specifications, and contracts. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings. Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. • Conducts on-site inspections to review and inspect the progress or completion of projects, to determine equipment and materials, to discuss work assignments and problems, and to investigate and resolve complaints. • Analyzes survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photographs, and other topographic or geologic data to plan projects. • Reviews highway and road designs and site plans for compliance with construction, zoning, land use and engineering standards. • Computes load and grade requirements, water flow rates, and material stress factors to determine design specifications. • Evaluates soil tests and materials to determine adequacy and strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt or steel. • Inspects project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety standards. • Confers with contractors and vendors to direct construction, operations, and maintenance activities at project site. • Calculates estimates of quantities and cost of materials, equipment and labor to determine project feasibility. • Prepares bid proposals and specifications, participates in bid openings, and recommends procurement of materials, equipment, and contractor bids. • Conducts studies of traffic patterns or environmental conditions to identify engineering problems and assess the potential impact of projects. • Performs related work as assigned. Minimum Requirements MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. • Two (2) years of engineering experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
