Salary : $73,866.00 - $89,388.00 Annually Location : Stamford, CT Job Type: Full Time Department: Office of Operations Division: Vehicle Maintenance Opening Date: 03/13/2026 Bargaining Unit: IUOEO JOB SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager or designee, perform skilled diagnostic work in the maintenance and repair of construction, road maintenance, and other equipment generally of a heavy nature requiring special techniques and practices. May occasionally perform work on light duty vehicles and related equipment. Responsible for diagnosing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, on-board or vehicle related computer failures. Is frequently required to hand fit and adjust various parts made for heavy equipment, using hand tools and common shop machines such as drill presses and grinders. Duties may involve some tool and part design or fabrication. Employees in this class may be assigned to work with an apprentice for training purposes. EXAMPLES OF DUTIESRepairs heavy construction, road maintenance, or firefighting equipment, such as gasoline, diesel and alternative fueled trucks and equipment, including but not limited to; heavy duty dump trucks, refuse trucks, tractors, vac trucks, flushers, sweepers, skid steer, rollers, power shovels, fire apparatus, cranes, man-lift devices hoists, trenching machines, backhoes, generators, pumps, large riding mowers, and pneumatic tools. Removes, repairs, overhauls, and installs engines, of heavy-duty trucks and equipment. Diagnoses and repairs heavy duty vehicle and equipment systems including, but not limited to hydraulic systems, air brakes, hydraulic brakes, ignition systems, suspension and steering systems, transmissions, electrical, charging systems and emission systems. Performs minor welding, and other minor fabrication tasks. Follows all established Preventative Maintenance programs. Performs emergency service calls to disabled vehicles. Mounts and changes tires as needed. Records vehicle maintenance data in vehicle software program records as directed, including materials usage. In an emergency may be required to work on fire apparatus, police vehicles and equipment. Maintains work site area in a safe, clean condition; performs other related work as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School or Trade/Vocational School graduate plus technical courses in or related to vehicular mechanics, and for (4) years of journeyman experience in heavy vehicle repair and maintenance, associated technical trades or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience must have been obtained during the last ten (10) years. Within twenty-four (24) months of employment must obtain a minimum of four (4) ASE Certifications or three (3) TASE Certifications. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: Candidates will be evaluated based on their education, training and experience.
