Job Description

Electrical Technician Installs and repairs wiring, fixtures, and equipment for all electrical services aboard ship and in shipyard facilities, following blueprints and wiring diagrams. Major responsibilities include: Pulling fasteners and cables through cableways and devices. Stripping insulation from wire ends and soldering ends to terminals. Connecting power-supply circuits to radio, radar, sonar, fire control, and other electronic equipment. Testing electrical characteristics such as voltage, resistance, and phase rotation. Planning layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures based on job specifications and local codes. Connecting wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components. Testing electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures. Inspecting electrical systems, equipment, and/or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustments or repairs. Diagnosing malfunctioning systems or components using test equipment and hand tools. Working from ladders, scaffolds, or Aerial Work Platform (AWP) to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures. Repairing or replacing wiring, equipment, and/or fixtures using hand tools or power tools. Assembling, installing, testing, and/or maintaining electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, or fixtures. Pulling, routing, and banding cables. Other duties may be assigned. Understanding and following Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) procedures. Understanding and following Work Authorization (WAF) process. Must follow all Hot Work procedures. Skills and qualifications: Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, determine operating error root cause, and fix the error. Repair controllers, internal components and/or systems using job specific tools. Identify complex problems, and review related information to develop, evaluate, and implement solutions. Observe gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure machines are functioning properly. Determine how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes. See, discriminate, and interpret details at a close range. Visually discriminate color, specifically, match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness. Understand electrical machines and tools, including their use, repair, and maintenance. Understand various power applications and how to safely connect equipment. Understand the various voltages & amperages used specifically in marine settings. Understand and be able to work with both Alternating Current and Direct Current systems. Work at all height levels (high and low). Work in confined and enclosed spaces. Work in inclement weather conditions. Work non-standard work hours, as required. Education and experience: Applicants with 3+ years of maritime electrical experience preferred. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required. General knowledge of blueprints preferred. Knowledge of electrical machines and tools, including their use, repair, and maintenance. Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications. Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote security for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Candidates must be able to pass a qualification test prior to being considered for hire. Should have a working knowledge of the Naval Sea Systems (NAVSEA) Standard Items. Working knowledge of local NAVSEA Standard Items, specifically Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC).
