Summary The Woods Teacher will lead a hands-on, project-based classroom where students develop craftsmanship and technical skills in wood processing and furniture construction. The instructor is responsible for teaching the fundamental and advanced principles of woodworking, maintaining a safe and modern woodshop environment, and fostering a "Maker" mindset through the creation of physical prototypes. This position is for the 2026-2027 School Year. Responsibilities Design and implement a multi-level woodworking program including: Basic Woods: An introductory course focused on safety, hand tools, and small-scale project construction. Advanced Woodworking: A rigorous course focused on furniture design, advanced joinery, and complex assembly techniques. Teach technical sketching and project planning for custom wood projects. Foster a collaborative environment through "Design Challenges" that require students to solve structural or aesthetic problems. Assist students in building digital and physical portfolios for college admissions or trade apprenticeships. Manage the "Wood Lab" ecosystem, ensuring all machinery is calibrated, sharp, and functional. Perform routine maintenance on table saws, planers, jointers, and sanding equipment. Material Management: Oversee the inventory and procurement of consumable supplies including various wood species, hardware, adhesives, and finishing agents. Maintain a rigorous, mandatory safety certification program for all students using power equipment. MITES Participation: Encourage and mentor student participation in the MITES (Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society) annual competitions and regional craft fairs. Qualifications Bachelors Degree in Education, Industrial Arts, Technology Education or a related field Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate IX or TE Standard secondary teaching certificate with significant hobbyist or professional experience in woodworking, carpentry, or furniture design Work experience that qualifies candidates for ACA certification High proficiency in the use and maintenance of industrial woodworking machinery. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical blueprints and project schematics. Adaptive learner willing to stay current with modern finishing techniques and emerging fabrication technologies. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from the community, regulatory agencies or staff members. Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, and ledgers. Basic Algebra and computation skills to work with the systems and programs required. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
