Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary Under general supervision of the Power Plant Zone Manager, Power Plant Assistant Zone Manager, Utility Operations Zone Manager, and Director of Utility Operations, the Mechanic performs skilled work in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all Utility Operations systems at the Danforth Campus and all remote University owned locations (excluding Quadrangle Management leased retail spaces and Quadrangle Housing managed properties). The Mechanic will perform daily operational rounds, perform scheduled maintenance, respond to service calls, and relieve any mechanic in an operational role for vacations, sickness, injury, or other absences regardless of shifts. They also assist the Night Mechanic(s) in emergencies when working evening/night shifts. Employees in Utility Operations are assigned to specific groups but the assignment may change based on operational needs or other management discretion. Typical Hours: Monday-Friday, 6:30 AM-3:00 PM. Hours/shifts may be rescheduled to meet the Emergency and Operational needs of the University. Employees must be available before and after normal working hours for emergencies and manpower coverage. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Operates, maintains, repairs, removes, and installs all existing and future central plant heating and cooling systems, related piping distribution systems, and related electrical/control systems. These include chillers, boilers, pumps, cooling towers, air handling units, water treatment systems, water softeners, variable speed drives, and utilizing Building Automation Systems (Metasys) to monitor and diagnose system issues. Additional duties include performing annual equipment teardowns, corrective and preventative maintenance, and equipment cleaning in preparation for inspections and seasonal lay-up. This includes opening, cleaning, and closing of all heating and cooling equipment. Proactively identifying, trouble-shooting, communicating and addressing needs both without direction, when appropriate, and at other times when responding to work orders and/or a supervisor's instruction. Responds to work orders and other requests in a timely, efficient, competent, knowledgeable, safe/secure and friendly manner. Maintains data, records and other work standards accurately and appropriately as per recognized departmental/university policies and practices. Utilizes materials, supplies, tools and other university property, as well as handling one's person in a safe/responsible, productive manner. Willingness to work in multi-craft positions/situations. Performs other duties as assigned. Working Conditions: Job Location/Working Conditions Must be willing to provide one's own hand tools; be available for emergencies after normal work hours. Work Experience: Working In A Particular Craft Or Multi-Craft Position (5 Years) Skills: Not Applicable Driver's License: A Class E (MO) or Class D (IL) license and a good driving record are required for this position. More About This Job Required Qualifications: Must have successfully completed a recognized craft apprenticeship program, a technical school training program (such as a Ranken Technical College two-year certification program) or other equivalent training program. Must be able to obtain a Missouri Class E Driver's License by the end of the probationary period and cannot drive University owned vehicles until Class E Driver's License is obtained. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to weld using stick and MIG welding, rebuild centrifugal pumps, read blueprints, plan jobs and provide necessary parts lists. Ability to respond and correct (without the need for supervision) afterhours emergencies such as boiler failures, chiller failures, gas leaks, water leaks, electrical/control related issues, etc. Knowledge of and ability to use related tools and equipment in a safe, journeyman like manner. Proven experience with working safely and efficiently while maintaining and operating heating and cooling equipment and systems. Ability to perform physically demanding, labor intensive work in hot or cold dirty environments, and ability to pass through various manhole access openings of equipment. Willingness and ability to work extended shifts while engaging in physically demanding work and to work in multi-craft positions/situations. Possess a high work ethic, ability and willingness to work in a team environment, and have a high degree of dependability.
