Medical Receptionist/Medical Assistant - Perry Health Center (School -Based) This is a full-time position during the School Year August through May (Paid year round) All school-based employees receive 90% of a full-time rate. (Monday through Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm) POSITION PURPOSE The Medical Receptionist/Medical Assistant provides first and last impressions of the organization so must be customer-focused and professional in carrying out responsibilities. Responsible for general office duties including, but not limited to, maintaining provider schedules, checking patients into and out of the health center, answering telephones, and filing. Under general supervision in a patient centered medical home setting, provides patient intake, assists with direct patient care, and performs specialized medical procedures of a routine nature, as dictated by established clinical protocol. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: High school diploma or GED certificate, required. Associate Degree in Medical/Dental Office Administration, preferred. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Successful completion of in-house training. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Medical assistant or equivalent clinical training preferred. At least one year of directly related experience preferred. CPR - BLS (basic life support) required. SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to attend to multiple tasks at the same time. Ability to prioritize assignments and responsibilities to ensure compliance with established deadlines and protocols. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with persons from a wide diversity of social, ethnic and economic backgrounds is necessary. Ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to established protocols. Ability to perform routine invasive procedures, such as HIV testing, in accordance with established clinical protocol. Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Knowledge of inventory management practices. Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments. Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment. Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories. Knowledge of outpatient clinical administrative procedures. Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements. Accurately enters patient information into Electronic Health Records. Assists management in reaching personnel from other departments when needed for consultation and referral. Determines items that can be handled personally, those which should be brought to the attention of the supervisor and those which should be referred to other areas. Ensures the equipment is functional and there is an adequate supply of all necessary forms stocked. Assists patients with completing information forms, as needed. Accepts patient payments and records payments accurately. Copies income verification and enters information into Electronic Health Records. Retrieves lab reports/patient records from other health care providers. Accurately types and sends correspondence, memos, notices, and reports. Sorts, files, and retrieves correspondences, records, and documents upon request. Operates standard office machines and equipment. Sorts/collates mail and printed materials/notices for distribution. Makes confirmation calls to patients for appointments. Accurately codes all diagnoses in Electronic Health Records based on completed encounter forms. Collects and accurately input patient payments into practice management system. Maintain patient paperwork including consent/ROI insurance verification. Participates in Quality Improvement activities and serves on other committees as assigned. Travels when necessary to meet operational needs. Assists with direct patient care procedures and related tasks; checks in patients, assists in obtaining patient histories, takes vital signs, prepares charts, and assists with medical examinations. Performs routine specialized procedures, such as HIV screenings, fluoride varnish application and sterile dressing changes under established protocols. Completes patient health screenings including hearing, vision, and all CLIA waived testing. Maintains stocks of medicines and medical supplies as necessary. Educates and advises patients on specified medical issues within established parameters. Schedules and monitors patient appointments; may coordinate routine office activities and administrative functions in support of unit activities. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods. Performs patient education and discharge instructions. Completes referrals and schedules tests for patients. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is mostly sedentary demanding sitting, some walking, lifting, and bending. Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with duties in an office setting will be performed on a repetitive basis. This also includes bending, twisting, reaching, lifting, pulling, pushing, and walking. The ability to distinguish letters and symbols as well as the ability to utilize telephones, computer terminals, fax machines, and copiers is required.
