Job Title:Freight Operations - WarehouseJob Location: 6700 West Marginal Way SWReports to:Warehouse Operations ManagerStatus: Non-ExemptClassification:Regular Full TimeStart Date:ASAPSUMMARY: Loads, unloads and transfers cargo from trucks, warehouses, equipment, and customer vehicles to facilitate the shipment of freight to via barge to, from and within Alaska/Hawaii. This is a safety sensitive position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Operate up to a 6000# forklift to receive, deliver or load palletized/unitized cargo shipments. Handle loose shipments as required. Interface with customers by giving instructions, direction and assistance on procedures for handling cargo shipments and preparing the Bill of Lading. Count, inspect and check markings on inbound and outbound cargo shipments for receiving or delivering those shipments per the requirements of the Bill of Lading. Count, weigh and verify actual shipment to the Bill of Lading. Capture damages and packaging deficiencies when they are present using technological tools. Load and unload materials onto or from pallets as efficiently as possible, by hand or forklift. Ensures proper securing and blocking to prevent damage in transit. Secure shipments to avoid movement within a variety of equipment with banding, dunnage, lumber, binders or chains. Consolidate customer shipments as efficiently as possible by port, temperature, size and other variables as required. Load shipments to containers and/or platforms utilizing judgment for efficiency in keeping with the nature of the cargo involved. Inspect, clean and sweep out equipment as needed prior to reloading with cargo. Assist in the maintenance of company property, to include sweeping of warehouse floor, equipment, and other service center facility housekeeping duties as required. Work in other departments as needed. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations as well as company policy and standards. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous forklift certification, Freight Operations and Break Bulk experience preferred. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret such as safety rules, technical procedures, procedure manuals, operating and maintenance instructions and governmental regulations. Ability to write clearly and be understood. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and apply those concepts to work related situations. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid driver's license and good driving record is preferred. Must be eligible to apply and be issued a TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Credential). Able to meet forklift certification requirements. OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to meet a regular work schedule. Regular attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position. Daily physical presence is required. Ability and willingness to work overtime as required. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work to meet schedules/deadlines. Ability to work alone or as part of a team with minimal supervision. Ability to change focus and job duties in a fast moving, time restricted environment. PC skills required: Windows, Excel, Outlook, keyboarding proficiency PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear while communicating with employees and customers either in person or on the radio. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and climb or balance while inspecting freight. The employee is regularly required to use legs to walk and stand use hands and fingers to lash, band, sweep and move freight or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear and see while working around moving machinery. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch during the freight loading and unloading processes. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus during the normal course of the job. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is moderate in the office to very loud in the terminal operations. COMMENTS: This job description is not an employment agreement or contract.
