The eligibility list will be used to fill permanent vacancies which may occur during the life of the eligibility list. In a promotional and open recruitment, the promotional list shall take precedence. When the promotional list contains fewer than three eligible and willing employees, certification of additional ranks shall then be made from the open list. Positions in this classification are full-time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. The recruitment process will consist of a written, performance examination and oral technical interview, which is tentatively scheduled during the weeks of April 13 - May 1, 2026. BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, perform skilled duties of construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of water, gas, and waste distribution and collection systems, and related fixtures of school facilities. FUNCTION & DUTIES Perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water, gas, sewer, and related systems. E Perform semi-skilled work in the maintenance trades. E Perform journey level work in the water, gas, and sewerage craft areas. E Identify parts and material needs in the water utilities function. E Assure that proper installation, maintenance, and repair standards are met. E Use proper safety procedures and practices individually and as member of a team in and around the work site. E Inspect, test, repair, and certify backflow prevention devices and maintain related records. E Respond to emergency call-ins as required. E Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to water, gas, and sewer system installation, repair, and maintenance. E Safely operate a district vehicle; clean and service assigned vehicle. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water, gas, and sewer systems in school facilities. Basic shop and analytical math as they relate to the water distribution trades. Pool equipment maintenance and repair. Appropriate CCR safety regulations and other codes and regulations pertinent to the trade. Basic record keeping techniques. Laws as they relate to driving a motor vehicle. Defensive driving methods. ABILITY TO: Participate as a member of the water utilities crew in the safe, efficient and successful completion of the assigned work. Install, maintain, and repair water, gas, and sewer systems in school facilities in an efficient and competent manner. Safely operate a variety of tools and equipment necessary to install, maintain, and repair water, gas, and sewer systems. Lift objects weighing seventy pounds in the routine discharge of duties. Climb ladders and work on roof top fixtures. Do physical work on underground fixtures by entering trenches and other underground areas. Communicate effectively with others in and out of the workplace, including city and utility personnel. Read and work from blueprints, shop drawings, and other common construction documentation. Obtain a Los Angeles County Backflow Testers certificate within the first five months of employment, and maintain currently on an annual basis thereafter. Maintain routine records. Operate a computer. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Maintain a valid California driver's license. Operate a motor vehicle. Demonstrate attendance sufficient to complete the duties of the position as required. Demonstrate mental acuity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position. Be motivated to produce high quality work product. Work within stressful situations. Maintain a work pace appropriate to a given workload. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Any combination of education and experience equivalent to: graduation from high school plus four years' journey-level experience in an applicable trade. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. Obtain valid Los Angeles County Backflow Tester's certificate within the first five months of employment, and maintain currently on an annual basis thereafter. Must be, and remain, insurable under the District's vehicle driver's insurance policy at the standard rate. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor environment; subject to adverse weather conditions, climbing, bending, stooping, and heavy lifting, carrying, and pushing. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized tools and equipment; heavy physical labor; bending at the waist; kneeling or crouching; standing for extended periods of time; heavy lifting and carrying items up to 70 pounds; and pushing or pulling. HAZARDS: Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber, and exposure to offensive or unhealthy vapors and fumes. Full-time Employees earn up to: 12 paid vacation days per year 12 paid sick days per year with unlimited accumulation 13 paid holidays The District offers two excellent medical plans, Blue Shield and Kaiser Permanente; two dental plans, Delta Dental and MetLife SafeGuard; and vision care through Vision Service Plan (VSP). Currently full-time employees (employees working 6 hours or more per day) pay 20% of the premium cost for these plans. All plans are available to the employees and their dependents. This coverage is available to employees working a minimum of 20 hours per week. Retirement benefits include membership in CalPERS (California Public Employee's Retirement System) and Social Security (OASDI). This is a joint contribution plan. To qualify for CalPERS an employee must work a minimum of 20 hours per week or already be a member, if not the employee is eligible for an alternative retirement plan. Additionally, the District encourages employees to pursue professional growth, and provides financial incentive for classified employees completing professional growth programs. Additional benefits available to employees to which the District does not contribute include life insurance, a Section 125 Flexible Benefit Plan, an income protection plan, and a credit union. Substitute employees are not eligible for vacation or holiday pay but are eligible to earn sick leave at the rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, not to exceed 48 hours.
