University of Rochester: Office of the Provost: Academic Center: LLE-Laboratory for Laser Energ **Salary Range or Pay Grade** $115,000-180,000 **Description** The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester has an opening for the leader of the Special Projects Group within the Experimental Division. The successful candidate will provide leadership and oversight of scientists and engineers performing Research and Development (R&D) on pulsed laser effects on materials through large scale, complex experiments conducted on the Omega Laser Facility and MTW laser at LLE. The R&D also includes partnership with groups running various computational fluid dynamic models and using advanced optical diagnostics to provide high speed flow data to anchor the computations. The group conducts interdisciplinary research and interacts with the entire laboratory, including theory, facility operations, engineering and target fabrication to meet its research. The successful candidate must have demonstrated expertise and accomplishment in the some of the following areas: complex engineering for experimental science, diagnostics, laser material interactions, and fluid dynamics. **Responsibilities** + Lead and mentor a world leading group of researchers in their research and technical growth + Serve as a member of the Laboratory's management and leadership team + Identify research and development goals for the Experimental Division, implement a scientific, technology and engineering plan to achieve those goals, and provide updates on goals for funding agencies + Foster collaborations internally and with external partners: universities, national labs, and industry + Working with group members to define experimental campaigns conducted on the Omega Laser Facility, the MTW laser, and the CUBRC wind tunnels. + Specific Group Leader's management responsibilities include: + Track and report on the team performance. + Develop and manage group's budget (projects, equipment, supplies, travel). + Allocate and provide required resources for group members' research and development. + Conduct annual performance evaluations of group members. + Actively participate in workforce planning, quality assurance, mentoring, and training. + Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring new workforce in order to retain the best and brightest scientists and engineers to meet the evolving research and development needs of the Experimental Division. + Recognize, create, and implement plans to foster a dynamic workforce within the group, division, laboratory, and university. **Qualifications** PhD in Physics, Engineering, or related field **Application Instructions** APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS + a cover letter; + a curriculum vitae and a list of publications; + at least two letters of recommendation SALARY RANGE: $115,000 to $180,000 Annually The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job.
