Job Responsibilities At Richland Construction B, assists senior-level technicians with more complex inspection duties. Work in a safe, productive manner and maintain safety awareness at all times. Properly operate and maintain assigned vehicles/equipment and report defects. Report all accidents and injuries to their supervisor immediately. Wear proper clothing and required protective clothing and equipment. Continually monitor Contractor and subcontractor activities for non-compliance with respect to the health and safety provisions of the Contract. Assists more senior level inspectors with inspecting daily work performed by contractors on road projects, highway and bridge construction projects and other projects in support of the Resident Construction Engineer (RCE) in various disciplines including, but not limited to, asphalt and concrete paving, earthwork and base construction, construction of concrete structures, work zone safety and traffic control, erosion control and prevention, etc. Inspections shall be performed as a certified inspector in at least ONE of the following SCDOT/ACI (American Concrete Institute)/SCDES (SC Department of Environmental Services) certifications listed below: a.) SCDOT Asphalt RoadwayTechnician b.) SCDOT Earthwork, Drainage & Base Inspector c.) SCDOT Concrete Field Technician d.) SCDOT Foundations Technician e.) SCDOT Pavement Preservation Level 1 (Asphalt Seal, Micro/Slurry Seal,Concrete Pavement) f.) ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I g.) SCDES Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector. Maintains certifications (in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy) required to perform inspections. Inspections may include: grading, paving, drainage, non-structural concrete, placement of concrete and reinforcing steel for structures, structural foundations, traffic control, erosion prevention and sediment control, etc. Performs inspection duties on construction projects in areas in which inspector certification is not required. Areas include but are not limited to pavement markings, grassing, sign installation, etc. Immediately notifies the contractor and direct supervisor or RCE of any issues that occur on project site and ensures conflicts are resolved in an appropriate manner. Thoroughly documents daily construction-related activities and field measurements on standard inspection forms and field diaries. Completes SCDOT Construction software daily diaries, construction forms, and other reports related to inspection work performed. Assists with taking samples and performing various field tests on construction materials including, but not limited to, asphalt, concrete, and soil for compliance with applicable specifications. Assists with ensuring that materials are sampled and tested at the required frequency. Assists with ensuring compliance of work with applicable specifications. Ensures that manufacturer certifications and other required quality control documents are obtained prior to the installation or use of engineered construction materials, products, and devices. Accurately measures, calculates, and records quantities of installed contract pay items in the field and enters the information into SCDOT Construction software daily work reports for accurate contractor payment. Assists with measurement, calculation, and recording quantities of installed contract pay items in the field. Assist more senior inpsectors to monitor work zones to ensure traffic control devices are placed according to SCDOT and MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standards, and according to contract documents and plans. Notifies the contractor promptly of traffic control deficiencies and/or safety issues. Notifies the Resident Construction Engineer (RCE) of any areas of concern not corrected by the contractor. Assists with the use of survey instruments, metering devices, tape measures, and test equipment to establish and maintain the required construction line and grade. Assists with ensuring that roadways and bridges are constructed within the limits established by contract and the SCDOT Construction Manual. Minimum and Additional Requirements A high school diploma; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
