Laboratory InternDepartment: Laboratory OperationsDuration: 10-12 WeeksReports To: Laboratory Manager/DirectorProgram OverviewThe Rotational Laboratory Internship Program provides hands-on exposure to multiple functional areas within a regulated laboratory environment. Interns rotate through core departments to develop a comprehensive understanding of laboratory workflow, quality systems, operational efficiency, and cross-functional collaboration.Rotations may vary by location and business unit but generally include:Sample Management / AccessioningLaboratory Operations (Technical Departments)Quality Assurance & ComplianceData Management / ReportingClient Services or Project CoordinationRotation Structure (Example 12-Week Model)Weeks 1-2: Orientation & Sample ManagementFocus: Entry point of laboratory workflowSafety and compliance trainingIntroduction to LIMS and internal systemsAssist with sample receipt, logging, labeling, and trackingLearn chain-of-custody and documentation control processesObserve how turnaround times and priorities are managedLearning Outcome: Understand how work enters and flows through the laboratory.Weeks 3-5: Laboratory Operations RotationFocus: Core laboratory workflowShadow technical staff in assigned departmentsAssist with routine workflow tasks under supervisionFollow approved procedures and documentation practicesObserve workload balancing and schedulingParticipate in team meetings and operational discussionsLearning Outcome: Understand day-to-day laboratory execution and process consistency.Weeks 6-7: Data Management & ReportingFocus: Data integrity and client deliverablesObserve data review and verification processesAssist with administrative data checksLearn reporting workflows and approval pathwaysUnderstand confidentiality and data security practicesReview how final results are communicated to clientsLearning Outcome: Understand the importance of accuracy, traceability, and reporting standards.Weeks 8-9: Quality Assurance & ComplianceFocus: Systems that support accuracy and accreditationLearn document control processesObserve internal audit or quality review activitiesAssist with record organization and reviewUnderstand deviation tracking and corrective action workflowsReview regulatory and accreditation frameworks applicable to the labLearning Outcome: Recognize how quality systems ensure reliability and compliance.Weeks 10-12: Capstone Project & Cross-Functional IntegrationFocus: Applied learningIntern completes a structured project such as:Workflow efficiency analysisDocumentation improvement initiativeTurnaround time evaluationInternal process mappingQuality trend summaryResponsibilities:Analyze observations from rotationsDevelop measurable recommendationsPresent findings to laboratory leadershipParticipate in final evaluation and feedback sessionLearning Outcome: Apply operational knowledge to real-world improvement.Key ResponsibilitiesAdhere to all safety and compliance policiesMaintain confidentiality of laboratory and client informationFollow established procedures and documentation standardsDemonstrate professionalism and accountabilityContribute positively to team cultureProgram GoalsBy the end of the program, interns will:Understand the full lifecycle of laboratory operationsRecognize the role of quality systems in regulated environmentsDevelop professional communication skillsGain exposure to multiple laboratory career pathsBuild foundational knowledge applicable across all business unitsQualificationsRequired:Currently a junior or senior pursuing a Bachelor's degree in a scientific, technical, or related fieldStrong organizational and communication skillsDetail-oriented and process-focused mindsetPreferred:Interest in laboratory science, regulatory compliance, operations, or quality systemsPrior technical or laboratory exposureSchedule & Pay$18.46/hr10-12 weeks20-30 per weekRotation schedule determined at program startMonday-Friday, 20-30 hours per week
