Orange Approved Supervisor Michael Sakhel Supervisor Email Please use dates within Chapman Academic Calendar(Start Date 08/10/2026 Projected End Date 05/23/2027 Average number of hours per week Up to 10 HrsPosition Summary Information Job Description Summary In support of the Student Affairs Learning Outcomes, the Wellness and Recreation team manages multiple fitness and recreation facilities and coordinates a variety of on- and off-campus recreation and wellness education programming. Alongside professional staff and in collaboration with other team members, the Fitness Education Instructor provides personalized support to help students acquire a baseline understanding of the fitness center equipment and understanding of proper form for equipment use. The Fitness Education Instructor strives to create welcoming environments that contribute to the University by building community, increasing the students' pride in Chapman University, and improving students' healthy sense of self. All Fitness Education Instructors are employees in the Department of Student Engagement and the Division of Student Affairs.Responsibilities Fitness Education InstructionEnsure each guest is authorized to use a fitness center and has completed the appropriate Chapman University waiver prior to each visit.Work collaboratively with program participants to develop relevant fitness goals.Provide encouragement and expertise for participants in support of their fitness goals.Provide accurate and clear instruction on how to use proper form when using strength training equipment.Tailor instruction to a diverse range of participants with varying levels of fitness experience.Facilitate three forty-five minute sessions per participant, including documenting instruction provided and takeaways related to each session. Execute each session's objective and goals while adhering to the expectations of and standards for the Fitness Education Program. Fitness Center Equipment/User SupervisionProvide excellent service to guests in all Wellness and Recreation facilities.Provide accurate information regarding Chapman University and Wellness and Recreation facilities.Wear required name badge and present:a positive image of Chapman University employees, specifically the Wellness and Recreation team.an image of an individual who understands themselves to be responsible for the safety of participants and for cultivating a welcoming and engaging experience for participants.Actively circulate through fitness centers to ensure a safe workout environment.Identify potential for risk and injury as fitness center guests use equipment and respond proactively with a courteous approach that prioritizes risk/injury prevention. Work with other fitness center staff to ensure equipment is organized and returned to its designated/intended location.Communicate and enforce Wellness and Recreation Facility Policy clearly and report related concerns promptly.Other ResponsibilitiesAssist in other ways with all of the above as determined by supervisor.Understand established campus and facility emergency response procedures.Follow emergency response procedures when responding to emergencies, including notifying professional staff immediately.Document all accidents, incidents, and emergencies resulting in personal injury, facility damage, or theft by completing an Accident/Incident Report.Offer, but do not administer, basic first aid supplies as needed.Promote the Fitness Education Program along with other Wellness and Recreation facilities, programs, and services.Promote the use of Wellness and Recreation virtual engagement platforms (e.g. RecPortal, CU Health and Wellness website, Panther Connect, Instagram, etc.) Attend all scheduled Wellness & Recreation staff meetings and training sessions.Serve as a representative for the Wellness and Recreation team at events as determined by supervisor.Participate in and contribute to Department of Student Engagement programs, services, experiences, and resources as determined by supervisor.Required Qualifications Personal Training certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine or International Sports Sciences Association (provided by the Department of Student Engagement)CPR/First Aid/AED certification through the end of the academic year (provided by the Department of Student Engagement)At least 1 year of experience working in a fitness training/education capacityCommitment to teamwork, customer service, collaboration, conflict resolution, and providing service to studentsAbility to exercise initiative, work independently, and hold high standards of dependability and accountabilityAbility to work with and establish supportive relationships with a diverse group of individualsAbility to use tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentialityStrong time management skills, including punctuality to arrive at shifts on-timeEffective written and oral communication skillsPossess attention to detail, the ability to accept direction, willingness to work and learn from colleagues and supervisor, and commitment to apply feedback to work performanceWillingness to accept direction and changes to responsibilities as determined by supervisorAbility to lift objects of 45 lbsDesired Qualifications 2-3 years of experience working in a fitness training/education capacity Familiarity with departments and organizations at ChapmanKnowledge of or experience with campus policies and proceduresKnowledge of topics related to student transitions, belonging, and needs in higher educationKnowledge of Microsoft Office, Humanity, and Fusion systemsSpecial Instructions to Applicants Mandatory training August 10 - 14, 2026Budget Information Is Federal work-study required?
