**Chicago, IL, US** **Salary Range:** $25.00 To $30.00 Hourly **Position Summary** **The Maintenance Technician / Building Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, repair, and upkeep of agency buildings, grounds, and mechanical systems. This role ensures a safe, clean, and fully functional environment for staff, visitors, and program participants, while supporting efficient building operations and preventive maintenance efforts.** **Key Responsibilities** + **Perform general building maintenance, repairs, and upkeep to ensure a safe and operational facility** + **Open and close the building as scheduled, including alarm systems, lighting, and securing offices and common areas** + **Conduct routine inspections of building systems and facilities; document findings and maintain maintenance records** + **Perform preventive maintenance activities on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems** + **Troubleshoot basic HVAC, electrical, and plumbing issues and coordinate with supervisors when outside contractors are required** + **Complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner, providing clear documentation of work performed** + **Maintain exterior areas including sidewalks, entrances, landscaping, patios, and walkways; ensure safe conditions during inclement weather (rain, snow, ice)** + **Regulate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to maintain comfort and promote energy efficiency** + **Inspect exit doors, panic hardware, and safety systems to ensure compliance and proper operation** + **Perform routine painting, minor carpentry, and facility touch-ups as needed** + **Operate tools, equipment, and maintenance machinery safely and properly** + **Perform all duties with a strong focus on safety, accessibility, and consideration for individuals with visual impairments** + **Support organizational operations by performing other related duties as assigned** **Qualifications & Experience** + **High school diploma or equivalent required** + **Minimum of 3 years of hands-on maintenance experience, including basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general carpentry** + **Working knowledge of HVAC systems required** + **Ability to read work orders, manuals, and basic technical documentation** + **Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently** + **Dependable, self-motivated, and well-organized** + **Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and safely operate maintenance equipment** **Additional Requirements** + **Ability to work a flexible schedule as operational needs require** + **Willingness to occasionally travel to off-site locations (less than 10%)** + **Commitment to the organization's mission of providing opportunities for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind, or multi-disabled** **Work Environment** + **This position involves regular physical activity, including walking, standing, lifting, climbing ladders, and working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.** **_This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed.
