Position Type: Facilities and Construction/ApprenticeDate Posted: 1/6/2026Location: MaintenanceJOB TITLE: REFRIGERATION APPRENTICE-LEVEL 1 DUTY DAYS: 240 PAY GRADE: N04-13PRIMARY PURPOSE: Responsible for the repair, maintenance and installation of commercial ice machines, walk-in and reach-in coolers, and freezers. QUALIFICATIONS: Certification/Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Have a valid Texas Driver's License and meet/maintain the insurance requirements of PISD. Must pass a drug test and be part of a random drug testing program. Must pass criminal history check. Special Knowledge/ Skills/Experience: Demonstrate general knowledge of operation, maintenance, installation, and repair of work-related systems of designated craft. Demonstrates the ability to work unsupervised. Hold EPA Certification in refrigerant recovery or be able to obtain one within one year of taking the position. General knowledge of tools used in designated craft. Demonstrate ability to follow verbal and written instructions. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Assist with installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial ice machines and other commercial kitchen equipment. Completes work orders as requested. Assist with the repairs of refrigeration equipment such as compressors, motors, and other related equipment under the supervision of a licensed HVAC technician. Completes preventative maintenance of equipment as assigned. Must have a working knowledge of computer systems regarding email, work order, and time entry systems. Maintain the shop, equipment, and vehicle in order. Assist other crafts as needed Must be willing to respond to occasional after-hour emergencies. Perform other duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal); maintain emotional control under stress; interpret policy, procedures, and data; coordinate district functions Physical Demands/Environment Factors: Strenuous walking, standing, climbing, and heavy lifting, must have use of all faculties. Must be able to work from ladders and elevated platforms. Work outside. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures. Exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, and materials. May work on slippery and uneven surfaces.
