Job Summary Our client is seeking a Senior Underwriter to serve as the primary subject matter expert for Stepwise underwriting configuration at a Texas-based level-funded health plan carrier. This role involves designing, configuring, and implementing underwriting rules, workflows, and logic to support underwriting operations. The position collaborates closely with underwriting leadership, actuarial, sales, and IT to ensure alignment with business strategy, risk, and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities Lead the configuration and optimization of underwriting rules, rating logic, and workflows. Translate underwriting guidelines and pricing methodologies into Stepwise rule sets and decision frameworks. Build and maintain automated underwriting elements, triggers, and decision paths. Serve as the primary liaison with Optum/Stepwise for platform updates and issue resolution. Conduct and oversee UAT for new builds, rule changes, and product updates. Implement rating and risk adjustments accurately in partnership with underwriting leadership and actuarial teams. Ensure compliance with Texas regulations and internal governance standards. Develop documentation, best practices, and training materials for underwriting users. Provide advanced troubleshooting for complex underwriting scenarios. Act as a mentor and technical resource to underwriters and power users. Qualifications 4+ years of health insurance underwriting experience, preferably in level-funded or self-funded products and/or experience in underwriting systems/software. Advanced Excel skills. Strong understanding of group underwriting methodologies and risk assessment. Knowledge of Texas health insurance market and regulatory considerations. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills. Ability to work cross-functionally with actuarial, IT, sales, and operations teams. Preferred Skills Hands-on experience as a Stepwise power user or superuser, including rule configuration and workflow builds. Additional Requirements M-F 8-5pm schedule.
