The Writing Center at the New York Film Academy is seeking a college tutor who specializes in academic writing with a background in TESOL or relevant field.Job Summary:In the Writing Center, tutors provide students with support and guidance in order to promote academic growth. This office services currently enrolled NYFA students from all programs and departments, offering consultations for a variety of assignments, such as academic papers, screenplays, and presentations. Tutors are expected to target higher order writing concerns such as organization, content, and focus. Tutors do not proofread or edit for grammar or mechanical errors, but they do instruct students on language usage. Outside of writing consultations, tutors are expected to create and run workshops for students that target crucial topics in academic and creative writing. As a member of the NYFA community, tutors also provide students with information about other resources and departments they may benefit from. Tutors in this role may be considered for future teaching opportunities at NYFA, depending on program needs.Tutors hired for this role must be available to work in a hybrid capacity, including both on-campus and remote tutoring hours. This part-time position offers hours based on student bookings and assigned workshops; hours may vary throughout the semester.TUTOR RESPONSIBILITIES:The following responsibilities are general duties that a particular employee in this position may or may not be required to perform. The day-to-day duties required of this position may vary. Deliver instruction in accordance with the learning objectives set for the course or tutee's course, including practical skills, methods, theories and techniques. Provide academic English instruction in the areas of reading, academic essay writing, grammar, etc. Assess student work, including but not limited to, assigned projects, papers and classwork. Attend & participate in faculty meetings and/or departmental curricular meetings, if requested by the Director of the Writing Center. Participate in training sessions run by the Writing Center. Create and facilitate workshops for students in the subject areas of creative and academic writing. Create educational resources for students in the subject areas of creative and academic writing. Collect basic data from tutoring sessions as a way of tracking attendance. Support students in their integration of academic research and provide them with the tools to accurately cite their sources. Adhere to institution-wide policies & procedures and follow the correct protocol with respect to the student code of conduct.KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES: Advanced degree in a writing intensive field Certified in TESOL or equivalent from an accredited institution Broad and in-depth knowledge of college level writing and researching skills Experience working with English language learners at the high school/college level or relevant experience Excellent oral and written communication skills Excellent interpersonal skills Knowledge of Google Suite Demonstrates high ethical standards and maintains confidentiality Excellent organizational skills Collaborative - willing to work with fellow team members on any required departmental work Ability to demonstrate positive attitudes towards cultural differences Experience with social media is a plus A keen interest in film, performance, and media arts is a plus Knowledge and/or experience with screenwriting is a plus Experience working with multilingual or international students is a plusNew York Film Academy (NYFA) is an equal opportunity employer.
