Position SummaryReporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will be responsible for all areas relating to accounting functions and financial reporting (cash basis). The Controller will supervise, execute and report the transactional business of the organization and be responsible for establishing and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. As part of the month end close process, they are responsible for the compilation of the monthly Federal Election Commission (FEC) report. This position has five direct reports. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesMonitor compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and company proceduresMonitor compliance with Federal Election Commission (FEC) regulations and company procedures Performs detailed review of all input and schedules supporting periodic FEC filings Issues timely and complete periodic financial statements under US GAAP Prepares financial statements and other reports to summarize and interpret current company financial position Reviews, investigates and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents and reports Assures information is entered into the accounting system accurately and in accordance with approved budgets Assures compliance with federal, state, local and corporate policies, regulations and lawsResearches and analyzes accounting mattersEvaluates current accounting practices and policies and drives continuous improvementWorks with external auditors during financial and operational auditsPrepares work papers and supporting schedules for the annual financial reviewProvides accounting information to Division Leaders on an as requested basisEnsures integrity of all financial information Ensures compliance with all tax related requirements (federal, state, local) Coordinates monthly closing processDevelops and implements various accounting procedures Develops, implements and upgrades financial system controlsRecruit, develop, and supervise accounting staff Lead periodic accounting projects All other Ad Hoc projects and duties as assigned Qualifications5 plus years of proven experience in a similar roleStrong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Expert understanding of financial statements including balance sheet, income statement and cash flow Ability to develop and establish financial policies and proceduresExperience in public accounting and/or audit is preferred Experience working with a non-profit, multi-entity or fund accounting industry is desirable Ability to supervise and mentor staff for professional growthExperience using Microsoft Great Plains is desirable Experience with managing fixed assets is desirableStrong computer skills: Word and ExcelAbility to work well with others in a team environmentPossess the highest level of integrity and character Self-starter who thrives in a dynamic and fast paced environmentAbility to analyze data and identify inaccuraciesStrong problem-solving skills Ability to plan and prioritize work activities within a fast-paced environment Excellent management, leadership and relationship building skills Well organized with the ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple prioritiesTeam player by being committed to the company's success and building successful relationships with peers and associates, cooperative attitudeUpbeat attitude with the ability to affect others in a positive wayEducation, Experience, and CertificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting CPA experience or CPA candidate preferred
