Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today's five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.Position OverviewThe Microns Process Optimization Intern will support manufacturing efficiency and throughput improvements across the Microns production line, with primary assignment to the Skins manufacturing process (solar and RF skins). This role focuses on analyzing end-to-end production flow, identifying bottlenecks and process starvation, and implementing data-driven improvements to increase output and reduce downtime.The intern will collect and analyze production metrics, evaluate cycle times, and collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to streamline operations. The primary objective is to improve productivity, targeting a minimum 20% increase in throughput while maintaining safety, quality, and schedule performance.This position provides hands-on exposure to aerospace hardware manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives in a fast-paced production environment.This is an internship opportunity, and you must be enrolled in the following semester. Please also be available for the following dates: 6/1/2026 to 8/21/2026Key ResponsibilitiesMap and document the full Skins manufacturing process, including solar and RF skin buildsIdentify bottlenecks, constraints, and process starvation points that limit throughputCollect and analyze production data including cycle times, takt time, WIP, downtime, and yieldDevelop and implement process improvements to reduce waste and increase line efficiencySupport line balancing, workstation optimization, and standard work developmentRecommend tooling, workflow, or layout changes to improve productivity and ergonomicsCollaborate with technicians and engineers to validate and deploy improvements on the floorMonitor performance metrics and quantify gains from implemented changesDocument process flows, findings, and improvement plansQualificationsEducationEnrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical disciplineExperienceCoursework or project experience related to manufacturing processes, operations, or production systemsExperience collecting and analyzing data using Excel or similar toolsFamiliarity with basic process improvement or lean manufacturing conceptsPreferred QualificationsExperience with Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologiesExposure to time studies, value stream mapping, or capacity planningExperience in a lab, shop, or manufacturing environmentBasic understanding of aerospace or electronics assembly processesExperience with data visualization or reporting toolsSoft SkillsStrong analytical and problem-solving mindsetAttention to detail and process disciplineAbility to work hands-on in a production environmentEffective communication with technicians and cross-functional teamsSelf-starter with a focus on measurable resultsTechnology StackMicrosoft Excel or Google SheetsBasic statistical or data analysis toolsManufacturing documentation systems (MES/ERP exposure is a plus)Standard engineering productivity toolsPhysical RequirementsRegular presence on the manufacturing floorStanding and walking for extended periodsAbility to lift up to 25 lbs occasionallyUse of PPE as required in production areasThis job description may not be inclusive to the duties and responsibilities listed.
