Job Description: Music Teacher (full- or part-time)BackgroundLibertas is a public charter school serving the Frayser neighborhood in Memphis. Our mission is to be a school for human flourishing: cultivating minds, hands, and hearts for lives of wonder, work, and love. We offer a rich, rigorous, and personalized education through the method of Dr. Maria Montessori and the classical liberal arts. We offer an attachment village of wraparound family supports and develop virtues of character. Tennessee has twice named Libertas a Reward School - a top 15% school. We currently serve infant and toddler, early childhood and elementary at our founding location and a middle school on a second nearby campus. Over the next 1-2 years we will open a small high school (250 students in grades 9 to 12) that uniquely imparts literary and cultural tradition while also fostering student enterprise and work of the hand - together preparing students for college, career, and citizenship. We also operate a nationally- accredited, state-licensed teacher training program. Learn more about Libertas on our website.Role summary and informationAs Libertas expands, we are seeking to hire another music teacher to join our growing Fine Arts department. This teacher, who could work at the elementary and/or middle level, will either deepen our current approach or propose to offer other complementary choral or instrumental programming.Full-time role or Part-time roleSchedule may be during the day (7:30 - 3:30) and/or expanded after school program (3:30 - 5:30). Please note that availability for after school programming on at least some days per week is preferred; this can either be in addition to, or instead of a portion of, school day hours.Start date: July 2026Lead a peaceful, orderly, rich, nurturing classroom that cultivates minds, hearts, and hands for lives of wonder, work, and love. Foster relationships with families to enable open and responsive communication about student growth and needs.Stipended leadership and curriculum development roles available based on interest and capacity. Measures of success for position to include student performance, family satisfaction, observation feedback, evaluations, and related indicators.Meaningful professional development and advancement opportunities.Reports to: Assistant Principal OR Elementary or Middle School Program Director (depending on assigned grade levels)Key relationships: Principal; Students and Families; Teachers; support staff.Key ResponsibilitiesPlanning and InstructionPlan and implement high-quality instruction for daily student lessons. Prepare lessons and materials and organize the classroom.Submit lesson plans weekly for review and incorporate feedback into planningRegularly observe students to inform instruction. Collect data about student performance and use it to guide instruction.Teach students with diverse needs in an inclusive environment; implement IEP accommodations and modifications with support from Student Support Team / special education staff. Participate in our Child Study process, including presenting data and implementing plans.Classroom CultureFoster habits of excellence, including order and grace & courtesy, through schoolwide and classroom-level practices and rituals such as: connecting before redirecting; using a warm and firm tone; tending the heart of virtue through presenting beautiful, enduring literature; and sharing responsibility for all our studentsBe a model of character and striving toward virtue for studentsSupervise students within the classroom and outside of the classroomFamily CommunicationCommunicate frequently with familiesPrepare quarterly report cards to share about student progressProfessional Development and RelationshipsParticipate in formal check-in with assigned academic support team member at least biweeklyEngage in teacher meetings, team planning, professional development, and data reviewsOther duties as assignedQualifications and TraitsTwo or more years of effective teaching experience in schools in underserved communities (preferred but not required)Willing to serve all students, regardless of background or needs, in an inclusive and supportive settingKnowledge of curriculum content and students' developmental needsSkills in instructional practices and classroom management for student achievementInterest in and commitment to humane educationStrong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skillsBachelor's degree; teacher license preferred but not requiredLove of learningFlexibility, initiative, and personal responsibility to work in a fast-paced, startup environmentFortitude for the challenges we will faceWarm and firm demeanorWork collaboratively, with a growth mindset. Give and receive feedback in a spirit of craftsmanship.CompensationSalary/wage competitive with the local school district and nearby charter schools: $40,000 to $55,000 full time ($25-$38 / hour part-time) based on experience and qualifications.Eligible for salary increases for performance or stipends for additional duties.Investment in faculty professional development and growth. We offer to eligible applicants our Teacher Residency program, which provides financial sponsorship and additional coaching and support to achieve state licensure and/or Montessori certification.
