Position: Apprentice LineworkerDepartment: PowerPay Range: $33.98 to $45.92 – based on Apprentice year Apprentice I: $33.98 Apprentice II: $33.98 to $38.73 Apprentice III: $38.73 to $40.72 Apprentice IV: $40.72 to $45.92Status: Full-time, Non-exemptOpen Date: 03/25/26Closing Date: 04/03/26POSITION SUMMARYUnder the close supervision of a Line Supervisor, works as a team member with the Journey Lineworker in the installation, repair, and maintenance of all power transmission lines, transformers, and related equipment in order to provide continuous electric power to City residents and businesses.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list; additional tasks may be assigned as needed.Works as an assistant to the Journey Lineworker in installing and replacing overhead transmission and distribution lines; transports poles on a truck, digs holes with a gas-powered auger and hand tools; sets poles and secures pole grounds and wire supports.Works as a crew member to install, maintain, or repair pole hardware and such auxiliary equipment as transformers, lightning arrestors, switches, fuses, and insulators using hand tools; climbs poles to install or replace broken or defective wires and hardware; secures new wires to cross arm insulators and splices wires to adjoining sections of line to complete circuit.Assists Journey Lineworker in laying underground power lines, installing secondary pedestals, and constructing transformer pads; makes necessary connections and installs transformers, high voltage terminations, or other necessary equipment on cables.Assists in handling emergency calls, such as power line failures, downed lines, and other emergencies as they arise. Will be required to wear a pager/phone and be available for call out at any time of day, year-round, regardless of weather conditions.Installs service lines to customers and connects meters to lines; tests and calibrates meters as needed.Services street light system; operates aerial lift to replace lights and defective parts; trims and/or removes tree limbs that interfere with transmission lines; installs Christmas decorations and special electrical connections as needed.Inspects the power system for faulty operation; makes necessary repairs and resets circuit breakers. Maintains trucks and equipment; changes oil, greases, cleans, and ensures proper maintenance of personal safety gear.Learns to perform all duties of a Journey Lineworker and assists as a line crew member as needed.Performs other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS1. Education and Experience:Graduation from high school or equivalent, AND One (1) year of experience as a skilled ground worker or certified in Electric Power Technology and/or equivalent training, ANDParticipation in an apprenticeship course approved by the State Apprenticeship Council2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Some knowledge of the principles of electrical distribution systems and working knowledge of safety principles related to handling regular and high voltage distribution systems.Ability to use equipment and tools used in maintenance and construction of power line distribution systems; ability to climb poles and handle high voltage equipment; ability to establish working relationships with other crew members, supervisors, and the public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform heavy manual labor; learn procedures, equipment, and materials used in electric distribution and transmission line repair; and ability to make simple mathematical computations.3. Special Requirements:Must possess and maintain a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and be deemed insurable and able to operate City-owned equipment and vehicles.Must be registered with the Utah State Apprenticeship Council.Must be willing to accept standby assignments after hours, on weekends, and on holidays.TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTBoom truck/aerial lift, brush chipper, derrick truck with digger, trencher, backhoe, block and tackle, cable hoists, climbing gear, electric drills and saws, and various hand tools used in regular and high voltage electric maintenance work.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Requires occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, ambient air, temperature extremes, fumes or airborne particles, traffic, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
