Please call (562) 431-3538 for additional information or visit to complete an employment application.SALARY RANGE: $16.90 - $20.54 (Based on experience and education)THE POSITIONThis position serves as a Recreation Leader in the Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department and performs a wide variety of recreational program assistance tasks, which include planning, organizing, setup, supervising, and teardown of various recreational activities & events. The position can work in a variety of recreation and senior programs and classes, community services, adaptive programming, aquatics programming, youth day camps, youth and adult sports, staff-led classes, marketing, special events, and/or assisting with other projects as assigned. The position may work between 10-28 hours per week depending on season and program. The position will work beginning with summer programs in 2026 in a variety of areas, but primarily in Summer Day Camp, Summer Parks Program, Sunburst Fields and Special Events. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSUnder the direction of the Recreation Manager, Recreation Supervisor, and Recreation Coordinator, Recreation Leaders are required to perform the following essential job functions: Plan, organize and supervise recreational programs and activities.Communicate effectively verbally to participants, parents and community members.Effectively monitor and lead program participants and volunteers.Effectively communicate verbally to supervisor, staff and participants.Be enthusiastic and maintain a high level of customer service.Be able to lift over their head, twist & turn a minimum of twenty pounds.Be able to stand for a long period of time either indoors or outdoors.Perform other duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESBe able to provide quality customer experience to patrons.Be team oriented and able to work in a team setting as well as individually if need be.Knowledge of various sports skills, games, special event planning, and craft activities.Prefer an individual that has experience working with youth of various age groups.Prefer a dynamic and enthusiastic personality with the ability to motivate staff and youth.Be able to work with people of all ages (youth, teens, adults, older adults).Effectively handle emergencies and/or stressful situations.Be able to participate in indoor and outdoor physical activities such as games, excursions, sports, field maintenance, event setup & teardown, basic cooking, etc.Certification in First Aid, CPR, AED required upon hired or within four weeks of hiring.Be able to work a flexible work schedule including weekend, evening, and holiday hoursDESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAININGCurrently attending or graduated from high school. College coursework with a major in recreation, child development, or physical education preferred. First Aid and AED Certification for adult and youth is a requirement. Validation of certification is required within four (4) weeks of hiring.A Work Permit for Minors does not need to be submitted at the time of application. However, it will be required if hired at the time of employment.If selected for employment, applicants who are minors under the age of (18) will be required to submit a CA Department of Education (CDE) Form B1-1 Request For A Work Permit Certificate of Age, which can be obtained from an applicant's High School. Supplemental InformationSELECTION PROCEDURE:A City Screening Committee will review all applications. Those candidates with the most relevant qualifications will be invited to participate in an oral interview to evaluate training, experience, and personal qualifications. Interview dates are tentatively scheduled for February 25, March 25 and April 22. Candidates chosen to participate in the interview process must choose one of the dates. Interviews will be held in person, no exceptions. Candidates chosen for hire will be required to complete the medical and background checks no later than May 8 in order to be considered for Summer 2026 programs. There is a mandatory staff meeting for all hired candidates on June 5.
