ASHEVILLE CITY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: PAINTER JOB STATUS: Full Time CONTACT: Tim.Shelton@ GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB The School System Painter is responsible for maintaining the aesthetic appearance and overall condition of school buildings by applying paint and other finishes. This position requires a keen eye for detail, knowledge of various painting techniques, and the ability to work efficiently to ensure that the school facilities present a clean and visually appealing environment. Essential Job Function: Surface Preparation: * Prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, sanding, filling cracks, and repairing holes as needed. * Ensure that surfaces are smooth and ready for paint application. Paint Application: * Apply paint, varnish, or other finishes to a variety of surfaces including walls, ceilings, doors, and trim. * Select appropriate painting tools and techniques based on the surface and type of finish required. * Use brushes, rollers, and sprayers to achieve the desired finish. Color Matching: * Ensure accurate color matching and consistency throughout the painting process. * Work closely with school staff or administrators to adhere to any specific color or design preferences. Safety Compliance: * Adhere to safety guidelines and protocols while handling paints, solvents, and other potentially hazardous materials. * Take necessary precautions to protect oneself and others, and follow proper ventilation procedures. Equipment Maintenance: * Maintain and clean painting tools and equipment regularly to ensure they are in good working condition. * Report any equipment malfunctions or the need for replacements to the appropriate supervisor. Coordination: * Collaborate with other maintenance and custodial staff to schedule painting projects in a way that minimizes disruption to daily school activities. * Communicate effectively with school administrators and staff regarding the progress of painting projects. Record Keeping: * Maintain accurate records of paint colors used, quantities, and areas covered for future reference. * Report any issues or concerns related to the condition of school facilities to the appropriate authorities. Quality Control: * Inspect finished work to ensure it meets established quality standards and specifications. * Make any necessary touch-ups or corrections as needed. Emergency Response: * Respond promptly (24/7) to emergency maintenance situations and provide necessary support during unforeseen events or disasters. Additional Job Functions: * Other duties assigned by the Director or Asst. Director. Qualifications: * High school diploma or equivalent. * Formal training in painting techniques or related field is a plus. * Certification in painting or related field may be advantageous. * Proven experience as a painter, preferably in an educational or institutional setting. * Knowledge of various painting techniques, tools, and equipment. * Ability to work independently and efficiently. * Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work. * Strong communication and interpersonal skills. * Knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to painting. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate power tools and mechanical equipment. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work. Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things. Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants. Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Also, D.D.C Controls and computer experience. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English. Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide and multiply. Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, with and shape. Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using tools. Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as maintenance equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color. Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.
