Position Type: Special Education Teacher/Teacher - Special EducationDate Posted: 3/4/2026Location: SecondaryDate Available: 08/07/2026Job DescriptionTitle: TEACHER - SPECIAL EDUCATIONPosition Type: ExemptPrimary Function:Assume responsibility for the instructional program for students with disabilitiesMinimum Qualifications:Possess a bachelor's or master's degree in education or a related field.Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement in Special EducationAbility to communicate effectively, both orally and in writingAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.Ability to develop and maintain required records and written reports.Possess high moral standards and integrity.Ability to use computer software programs and web-based applications.Ability to circulate around classrooms with varied seating and desk organization patterns.Ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the day if assigned to an itinerant position.Ability to prepare required written reports.Ability to monitor and ensure appropriate student behavior, including outdoor activity areas, gymnasiums, etc.Possess high moral standards and integrity.Performance Responsibilities:Perform tasks assigned to all teachers (see Teacher - Classroom Job Description)Teach socially acceptable behavior in instructional settings to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process, including other parts of the school such as outdoor activity areas, gymnasiums, etc.Develops lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of student with disabilities.Collaborates with school staff and parents to develop individualized educational programs (IEP) for students.Communicates regularly with parents or guardians to discuss student progress.Serve as a contributing member of school multidisciplinary teams.Adapt and modify curricula and instruction as required by individual students' educational plans.Conduct assessments, testing and diagnostic examinations of students, accordance to established procedures.Evaluates students' progress; maintains appropriate records; prepares progress reports according to guidelines.Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.Collaborate with general education teachers to plan for specially designed instruction for students with disabilities.Facilitate data collection process related to progress of IEP and academic goals.Ability to circulate around classrooms with varied seating and desk organization patterns.Serve as a member of Child Study, Eligibility, and IEP CommitteesPerform other duties as assigned by building administratorWorking Conditions & Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
