Job Description

This position is open only to current City of Hendersonville Fire Department employees. JOB SUMMARY This position supervises activities involving fire prevention, fire safety code enforcement, and building inspections. MAJOR DUTIES * Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff. * Identifies hazardous conditions and determines the existence of fire and safety code requirements, deficiencies, and violations. * Provides information and technical assistance concerning fire codes. * Reviews blueprints, architectural drawings, fire protection drawings, and site plans for conformance with applicable codes. * Implements Fire and Life Safety education programs for the public. * Conducts training for department personnel. * Prepares various federal, state, and local grant applications; ensures compliance with grant requirements. * Supervises fire investigations to determine origin and cause of all fires. * Responds to major incidents; when necessary, assumes incident command until relived by commanding officer; evaluates incident scenes and determines appropriate firefighting tactics and allocation of manpower and equipment. * Assists with the suppression, control, and extinguishing of fires; assists in performing rescue operations; drives and operates various fire vehicles as needed; administer first aid. * Acts as Safety Officer for the department; inspects all department buildings, vehicles, and equipment. * Prepares bid specifications as required for the Fire Chief. * Maintains logs and records in physical and electronic forms. * Performs other related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED * Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression standards, practices, strategies, and tactics. * Knowledge of fire protection practices. * Knowledge of emergency and disaster management principles and practices. * Knowledge of standard fire prevention codes, National Fire Protection Association standards, federal, state, and local laws, and department standards, rules, and regulations. * Knowledge of personnel and financial management principles and methods. * Knowledge of emergency medical principles and applications. * Knowledge of hazardous materials and explosives. * Knowledge of basic criminal investigations and laws. * Knowledge of basic police procedures. * Skill in management and supervision under both routine and emergency situations. * Skill in planning, analysis, decision making, and problem solving. * Skill in the operation and use of fire equipment and apparatus. * Skill in the use of communications and audiovisual equipment. * Skill in master planning, pre-fire planning, and hazard identification. * Skill in public and interpersonal relations. * Skill in oral and written communication. * Skill in arrest procedures. SCOPE AND EFFECT The purpose of this position is to direct fire prevention activities and programs. Successful performance contributes to the protection of life and property. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk with intermittent standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed in an office, except while at other emergency or fire scenes. At a fire scene, the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and hazardous situations. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY This position has direct supervision over Fire Prevention personnel. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Associate degree in related field and knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the field of work * Sufficient experience to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with 1-3 years of experience or service * Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Tennessee for the type of vehicle or equipment operated * Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the State of Tennessee; Certified Fire Inspector I, Certified Firefighter II, Certified Fire Investigator, Certified Medical First Responder, Certified Instructor I, Certified Fire Officer I * Ability to meet and maintain all requirements under Tennessee law for a police commission including qualification with a department issued firearm FLSA Status: Exempt Pay Grade: 22 Special Requirements To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter to City of Hendersonville HR office.
