Job Title: Painter Journeyman Company: NSC Location: Jacksonville, FL - Mayport Type: Full-Time Job Summary: NSC is looking for a dedicated Painter Journeyman responsible for cleaning and preparing surfaces, including metal and fiberglass, ensuring they are free from grease, dirt, scale, rust, and old contaminants. This position entails applying paint following drawing instructions and adhering to MIL and SSPC Standards for various parts, equipment, interiors, and exteriors of ships and boats. The journeyman will mix preservation materials according to material data sheets, mask areas to prevent collateral damage, inspect preserved areas, and perform touch-up work as needed. Key Responsibilities: Comply with OSHA standards and NSC's best safety practices. Arrive punctually at designated work sites and work assigned shifts and overtime as necessary. Maintain cleanliness and safety in the work area at all times, particularly at shift end. Complete daily work assignments and provide updates on unfinished tasks for shift turnover. Perform work per SSPC standards and NavSea Standard Item 009-32 or other applicable regulatory standards. Utilize appropriate sections of NAVSEA, ABS, Coast Guard standards, and manufacturer tech manuals for preservation tasks. Provide guidance to helpers and improvers as needed. Produce Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required by the work specifications or assignments from supervisors. Uphold NSC's Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy to ensure a respectful workplace. Carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form and resolve unforeseen events related to assigned tasks. Specific Tasks Include: Prepare work areas to maintain a safe environment. Remove existing paint, rust, scale, and other contaminants as specified or directed. Operate blasting and painting equipment as required. Direct and oversee the activities of assigned helpers and improvers. Dispose of paint chips and other contaminants according to NSC and regulatory requirements. Safely manage lines and leads required to accomplish work while adhering to NSC and OSHA safety standards. Execute Lock-Out Tag-Out protocols for work being performed. Qualifications and Experience: Ability to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence. Comprehensive understanding of ship repair terminology and compartment location nomenclature. Physically fit and medically capable of wearing all required PPE as prescribed under OSHA standards. Capacity to write Condition Found Reports (CFR) detailing the material condition of the ship and suggesting corrective actions. Proficient in conferring job-related information to supervisors and teammates. Experience using hand and power tools associated with the painting trade, including scraping, sanding, and needle gunning. Ability to apply coatings using brushes, rollers, or spray guns. Knowledge of various coating systems and their appropriate applications. Strong mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals using the US customary measurement system; basic understanding of the metric system. Minimum of six (6) years of related experience, with three (3) years in a maritime environment.
