Job Title: Technician Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt Reports to: Shop Foreman Pay Grade: TR 4- 6 Dept./School: Transportation Revised: 7/31/2025 Annual Work Days: 261 Funding: Local _____________________________________________________________________________________ Primary Purpose: Perform mechanical repairs to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Work on projects assigned, follow established procedures. Qualifications: Education/Certification: * High school diploma or GED from an approved entity * Acceptable driving record as specified by Texas Department of Public Safety for school bus drivers. * Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B) with P and S endorsements * Minimum of 6 Texas Association for School Bus Technicians (TASBT) certifications or 6 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications (Automotive A1 - A8, Medium/Heavy Duty Truck T1-T6 or School Bus S1-S7) or must obtain and maintain TASBT and/or ASE within 18 months of employment. * Certified Texas Vehicle Safety and/or DOT inspector license Special Knowledge/Skills: * Advanced knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine repair * Ability to diagnose electrical/electronic concerns and perform repairs with general supervision * Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision * Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair * Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts * Ability to pass alcohol and drug test * Ability to pass required bus driver safety training * Acceptable driving record * Ability to operate bus * Must have required tools or obtain them within 60 days of employment. Technician I Experience: * Two years' verifiable experience as technician Technician II Experience: * Three years' verifiable experience as technician * Computer diagnostics for automotive and diesel Technician III Experience: * Four years' verifiable experience as technician * Body shop experience required * Computer diagnostics for automotive and diesel * Ability to obtain a Class A driver's license Major Responsibilities and Duties: Maintenance and Repairs * Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical, electrical and electronic problems in vehicles. * Perform minor/major mechanical repairs. * Assist technicians with evaluating mechanical, electrical, and electronic concerns. * Access and utilize printed/electronic service/repair manuals. * Do welding and minor body work. * Service vehicles according to an established preventive maintenance schedule. Rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels. * Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance. * Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed. * Demonstrate process of preventive maintenance and visual inspections to mechanic helpers. * Perform preventive maintenance, including bleeding of air tanks, on shop equipment according to established schedules. Safety * Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures. * Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc. * Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately. * Help keep the shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition. Other * Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service. * Operate buses and other vehicles as needed. * Work irregular hours as needed. * Assist with training technicians and mechanic helpers. * May be required to be on call after hours and on weekends. * Serve as a substitute white fleet or bus driver as needed. * Other duties assigned by the supervisor. Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.
