A Maryland-based real estate investment and development organization has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Controller to join its accounting leadership team. With a dedicated and professional culture and a long-standing presence in the region, the firm's real estate portfolio includes commercial office, multi-family residential, and retail assets.The Controller will serve as the final operational control authority for the accounting function and is responsible for setting, maintaining, and enforcing standards related to accounting review, escalation, and financial readiness. This role ensures that accounting outputs across entities meet defined quality, control, and timing expectations prior to internal or external release.Duties & Responsibilities:Serve as the final internal approval authority for accounting outputs, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and readiness for internal and external useEstablish and enforce accounting review standards, escalation thresholds, and control expectationsProvide oversight of financial reporting, including interpretation of results and explanation of material variancesOversee budgeting, reforecasting, and financial planning activities across entitiesMaintain ownership of internal payroll activities, including review, posting, reconciliation, and final approval following third-party processingOversee cash management, accounts receivable activities, and investor distribution processesMaintain control over banking and spend platforms, including access, limits, and authority levelsCoordinate accounting and tax planning and readiness activities, including timelines and handoffs with internal teams and external partnersProvide operational leadership to accounting teams, including direct management, issue resolution, continuous improvement of accounting processes and supporting tools, and ad hoc reporting supportThe organization's commitment to professional standards has earned strong respect within the real estate industry. These standards guide how the organization operates and works together as a company.Position Start:ImmediateRequirements: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience8-10 years of progressive experience in accounting operations, review, and control environmentsExperience overseeing core accounting functions, including general ledger, close processes, and transactional accounting activitiesExperience operating in multi-entity or portfolio-based accounting structuresDemonstrated ownership of final review and approval responsibilities for accounting outputs in a multi-entity environmentStrong technical accounting skills and judgment, including the ability to evaluate complex transactions and apply appropriate accounting treatmentStrong understanding of accounting controls, review discipline, and escalation frameworksAbility to lead through influence, set clear expectations, and enforce standards across teamsCPA license is preferred
