The selected candidate would join the Bridge Maintenance group with the Department of Public Works. The Motor Equipment Operator I will perform the following duties:Assist with installing guard rails, handrails, and perform miscellaneous carpentry work to provide adequate safety structures.Assist with pouring concrete, filling pavement cracks with asphalt, and bituminous concrete on bridge surfaces to make adequate repairs.Assists in the repair or replacement of damaged structural components, including decking, expansion plates, retaining wall, railing, beams, and footings, to increase the life of the structure as well as maintain its safety.Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.Operate a dump truck and other light-duty vehicles in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from repair jobs.Operate light automotive and medium-duty power mowers for vegetative maintenance of public rights-of-way and other municipally owned properties.Operates equipment to carry materials between work sites. Operate a snowplow during snow events.Operate a backhoe.Operate weed eaters along with pole saws, chain saws.Perform sand blasting and chipping to prepare surface areas for maintenance and painting.Pre-employment physical is required.Please Note: This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather(flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus. CDL Hiring Bonus The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Driver's license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams.
