Summary/ObjectiveUnder general supervision, performs on-site construction engineering work requiring the application of standard techniques, methods, and procedures gained through construction engineering experience. Responsible for construction and materials inspection tasks for assigned projects and may work on non-routine and increasingly complex assignments. Monitors and documents progress and helps ensure adherence to contract and subcontract terms, performance, quality requirements, and engineering specifications. Works closely with the construction team and other staff to coordinate and complete work.Essential FunctionsAssist in administering portions of the contract and may prepare change ordersParticipate in arranging job progress meetings, material testing, and construction inspectionsAccurately interpret contract drawings, standard drawings, and specificationsMeasure, document, and calculate quantities of project work performedCoordinate the interface between design and field construction and inspection workConduct work with minimal supervision, exercising good engineering judgment and initiativeIdentify, report, and document construction activities to ensure compliance with contract documentsResolve field coordination issues and bring larger concerns to the attention of the resident engineer, contractor, or other individual in charge of the siteIdentify deviations from plans and specifications and offer ideas for resolvingProduce accurate technical reports to document daily construction inspection activitiesReview and monitor work for Quality Assurance/Quality Control purposes and course correct when applicableMonitor street and utility projects for compliance with traffic, survey, or construction activitiesBe present on-site when required by contractor(s) and/or project managerObserve and demonstrate all construction safety protocols; communicate concerns with the resident engineer, contractor, or supervisorDevelop and maintain collaborative and trusted relationships with multidisciplinary teamsMentor and delegate work to less experienced members of the construction teamPerform other duties as requiredEducation/ExperienceB.S. in civil engineering or related field (ABET/EAC-accredited program)4+ years of applicable experiencePE Required (or working towards licensure in the next 6-12 months)IDOT Documentation Certification and OSHA 30 required, or obtained within 6 months of hireValid driver's license requiredKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesDemonstrates ability to successfully engage with professionals in a multi-disciplinary environment, communicate with team members; build relationships and trustExercises sound engineering judgementSkilled in preparing reports, cost estimates, schedules, and quantity take offsEffectively applies experience and skills to increasingly complex assignmentsDemonstrates ability to convey information through effective verbal and written communicationProficient with computer-aided design software and other software packages typically associated with construction and engineering requiredProficient with general documentation software such as Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), Bluebeam, and/or PowerPointDemonstrates understanding of industry and construction practices, methodologies, and best practicesAbility to present recommendations and results to stakeholders as requestedProficient presentation skills and developing leadership skillsEffectively maintains office and field health & safety requirements and protocolsMaintains a work schedule conducive to team collaboration and project-specific requirementsPhysical RequirementsInvolves sitting some of the time, but requires the ability to conduct work on a construction site or other field locationMay exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to move objectsOccasionally lifts and carries up to 30 poundsConsiderable time may be spent at a workstation using a computer and using various forms of communication (telephone, email, messaging, etc.)Field work includes periods of driving or riding in a vehicle on construction sites and exposure to outside weather conditions and various environmental conditionsPhysical activities include walking, stooping, crawling, and crouchingThis job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive list of activities, duties and/or responsibilities required of the employee for this position.
