Purpose:The Los Angeles Film School prepares the next generation of creative professionals for careers in the entertainment industry, offering degrees in Animation, Audio, Entertainment Business, Film, Graphic Design, Media Communications, Music Production, and Writing for Film & Television. The Academic Advisor provides personalized academic advising to promote a positive and successful student learning experience. Academic Advisors are responsible for offering high-level guidance and support to the student population. They collaborate with the Education Department to create individualized success plans that include measurable academic benchmarks. Academic Advisors also coach students in time management and strategies to maximize academic performance, as well as provide access to student resources as needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Those that must be performed with or without an ADA Accommodation)• Proactive outreach to students via phone, e-mail and text as required by early alert systems. Monitor student progress by identifying situations that require attention and providing completion coaching.Provide assistance and guidance on overcoming barriers to academic success, including challenges related to housing, transportation, wellness, stress management, and behavioral concerns.Offer individualized student advisement on study plans, time management, goal-setting, and other student success strategies.Document all interactions, including actions taken.Motivate students to develop effective and sustainable study habits.Maintain high volume, high-quality student contact daily to meet advising goals.Perform administrative functions related to departmental initiatives, such as maintaining records for Probation, and Conditionally Reinstated students. Communicate with students and parents regarding academic goals, available services, and issues affecting academic progress, including disciplinary actions, probation or withdrawals.Communicate with faculty and department managers regarding student academic or conduct concerns.Uphold the policies and procedures of The Los Angeles Film School and its accrediting bodies.Maintain student confidentiality and comply with all regulatory guidelines (FERPA).Practice ethical, fair and honest business conduct.Attend training sessions and departmental meetings.Participate in extracurricular student activities facilitated by Student Affairs.Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Those that can be accommodated within an ADA Accommodation) Replace paper in the copy machine when in the office.Other Responsibilities:Other duties as assigned.Supervisory Responsibilities: NoneCompetencies/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: • Exceptional counseling, coaching and mentoring skillsProficiency in computer use and effective communication with students via telephone and e-mailStrong telephone-based customer service skillsExcellent written and verbal communicationStrong organizational and administrative skills, with attention to detailProfessional, tactful, adaptable, and team-oriented Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectivelyEducation and/or Experience:Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university requiredPrior experience in academic advising, admissions, or other student services department at the postsecondary level required.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: N/AComputer Skills:Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and OutlookEnvironmental Factors are those that are required and performed with or without an accommodation.Access to a suitable workspace that is quiet and free of distractionsAccess to high-speed internet access In-office presence per telework agreementPhysical Demands are those that are required and performed with or without an accommodation.Ability to work on a computer and communicate effectively via telephone and computer for the full shiftEmotional and Mental Demands are those that are required and performed with or without an accommodation.Self-motivated and proactiveStrong interpersonal, problem-solving, follow-up, and counseling skillsAbility to respond to complex student casesAbility to handle crisis situations involving upset students in a professional manner
