Job Posting End Date: Until Filled Shift: 1st Security Clearance: No Clearance JOB SUMMARY Sets up and operates machine shop CNC and conventional mills, lathes, drill presses, planers, or grinders to machine parts based on specifications from blueprints and technical manuals using measuring instruments and shop tools. Studies and understands specifications, such as blueprints, sketches, or descriptions. Verifies dimensions and alignment and creates sketches that reflect size and configuration with precision measuring instruments. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position. QUALIFICATION STANDARDS Seven years of previous experience or training as an inside machinist CNC or conventional is required. Working knowledge of machine operation is also required. Must be able to read blueprints. Must have skills in machining and measuring accuracy within close tolerances (within .0001) and have excellent hand/eye coordination. Must have knowledge in shop mathematics, basic trigonometry, and geometry skills. Must have basic computer skills and basic programming using X, Y, Z coordinates. Must have the ability to manipulate, lift tools, and do own set up. Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings. ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS 1. Set up CNC and conventional machines to be used according to specifications, drawings, or blueprints, ensure calibration of measuring instruments, and move material from manufacturing or needed space. 2. Assemble cutting tools in tool-holders and position tools in machine spindles according to directions and by using calipers, hand-tools, or insert cutting tools in specified machine magazines. 3. Turn dials to index cutting tools and location of clamps, and reposition metal stock on fixtures as directed by program instructions. 4. Other tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade. Ability to operate CNC Lathe Ability to operate CNC MILL Basic Ship/Area Specification/ Configuration Terminology Read, Write, and Orally Communicate in English Blueprint Reading Precision Tools and Measurement Hand Finishing Lapping Deburring Polishing Basic Rigging Basic Material Identification Shop Math Layout Pedestal Grinder Power Saw Operation (all types) Machine Shop and Shipyard Safety Operate Radial Drill Presses Use of Material Handling, Cranes, and Forklifts Selection of Proper Cutting Tools/ Cutter Speeds/ Accessories Tool and Cutter Grinding (including wheel type and selection) Ability to Set-Up / Operate Proficiently Machine and Tools Listed Below: Vertical Mill; Horizontal Mill; Vertical Boring Mill; Engine Lathe; Turret Lathe MATERIALS, TOOLS EQUIPMENT, WORK AIDS Vices, V-blocks, angle plates, and hand tools. Micrometers, height gauges, gauge blocks, blueprints, and layouts tools. Personal protective equipment required. PHYSICAL/MENTAL INVOLVEMENT Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships requiring repetitive or prolonged bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and standing. Must be able to regularly lift/carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present in an employee's work area. MARGINAL JOB TASKS Performs housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety, quality, and/or process improvement meetings as required. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise. Payscale: $ 39.10 - $40.45 This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
