Posting DetailsPosition Information Job Title Academic and Career Success Advisor Summary The Academic and Career Success Advisor will advise primarily first- and second-year students as well as transfer students on all academic issues, including, but not limited to, registration, transcript transfer evaluation, degree evaluations, and graduation. In addition to being the academic advisor of record, advisors will serve as their primary career advisor, helping students explore majors and careers, connect with relevant opportunities and mentors, and develop an Onward* plan that reflects their goals and ambitions - academic, professional, leadership and more. The Academic and Career Success Advisor will be part of an Onward team dedicated to supporting and guiding students through their Onward journey, with the ultimate goal of improving student retention, progression, and graduation. We provide students a method to make sense of what they are learning in their Onward experience and accompany them every step of the way.Duties and Responsibilities Assist students with course scheduling, planning, prerequisites, academic requirements and class sequencing.Remain current on changes in academic majors, minors, co-curricular programs, internship opportunities as well as all relevant university policies related to academic standing, registration, FERPA and satisfactory progress.Guide students through early assessments of values, skills, and interests to inform decision making.Collaborate with the other Academic and Career Success Advisors, Career Services, Financial Aid Office, Registrar's Office, Enrollment Services, Residence Life, and Business Office and other student support offices to help resolve issues and/or remove barriers to academic success.Teach multiple sections of Introduction to Onward course (AS 1100).Provide guidance regarding major/minor selection and appropriate co-curricular programs using an integrated academic and career lens.Help students identify and join at least one career interest community before transitioning to a faculty major advisor and career specialist.Collaborate with Onward Team members through shared documentation, referrals, and coordinated support.Support faculty academic advising efforts and work directly with students to aid in their retention and progression to graduation.Develop and deliver programming focused on transition to college life, academic and career success, change of major/minor, study abroad, substitution/waivers, university withdrawals and scheduling questions.Evaluate degree works templates, degree audits, 4-year academic plans, and transfer work with students, as necessary.Identify potential at-risk students and monitor progress (based in part on early alerts, mid-term grades, and end-of-semester grades).Evaluate risk factors/trends and develop outreach strategies and referrals for at-risk students.Collaborate with the Director of Academic Advising on academic standing decisions and updates on at-risk students.Serve as point person for all students with medical or personal emergencies; provide follow up with students, parents, and faculty as needed.Provide programming for special populations (commuter, transfer, first-gen, readmits, Living/Learning Communities, international or exchange students, etc.) as assigned.Inform the Director of Academic Advising, Assistant Vice President for Student Success, of key findings and trends, recommendations, and any other pertinent issues as related to the advising of students.Participate in New Student Orientation and Transfer Student Orientation activities and registration.Conduct personalized visits and meetings with prospective students and families.Other duties as assigned.Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree.1 year of professional work experience.Strong customer service orientation.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, faculty and administrators, both one-on-one and in group presentations.Proficiency in MS Word and Excel; Familiarity with Student Information Systems, Learning Management Systems, and CRM systems like Slate, and possibly Canvas. Familiarity with Google G-suite.Excellent organizational, interpersonal, collaborative, written and verbal communication skills.Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in a related field.Prior academic advising, career advising/coaching, or student services experience.Experience with Ellucian's Banner product and Slate.Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. However, this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.Physical Requirements Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.Hours Full Time FLSA Exempt (Salary) Compensation & Benefits Starting annual salary will be $43,888 - $48,000, commensurate with qualifications.
