Salary: $26.55 - $33.20 HourlyLocation : Water Purification Plant, WIJob Type: Full-TimeJob Number: 00101Department: WaterUtilityOpening Date: 12/29/2025Closing Date: Continuous Summary The City of Cudahy, Wisconsin seeks to fill a full-time position for a Water Utility Distribution Serviceman. The City of Cudahy maintains its own water distribution system. Position requires a High School graduate or equivalent; Experience in water distribution preferred but not required. Position requires a D-1 Waterworks operator certification with 1 year and valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A within 6 months of hire. Candidates must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing/ walking or sitting for long periods of time. This is a non-union hourly position. Wage rate per hour depending on qualifications and experience. The position includes 80 hours of vacation per year, 24 hours of personal time, 10 paid holidays and the ability to earn up to 80 hours per year in compensatory time. The City provides health care, retirement and other fringe benefits. REPORTS TO:Directly to Utility Serviceman II. Indirectly to Water Superintendent. PURPOSE OF POSITION:Under the general direction of the Utility Serviceman II, performs the duties necessary for the overall operation and maintenance of the water distribution system so as to provide safe and efficient water service to all customers. Carries out both the routine and emergency work of the water distribution system. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: watermain and appurtenance repair, meter replacement, customer service, hydrant testing and repairs, valve testing and repairs, inspections of private plumbing systems for possible cross connections, water meter testing and repairs, and all related work as required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:Work Duties will be assigned but not limited to the following general areas:Investigate problems in the water distribution system.Make repairs to water mains, services, valves and hydrants.Operate backhoe, loader, air compressor, pumps, pneumatic hammers, drills, saws, tapping equipment, pipe cutter.Tap water mains for service connections.Flush, test, and repair fire hydrants.Notify customers of service interruptions.Locate and operate gate valves and curb valves.Read, test, repair & install water meters.Drive truck over 26,000 pounds.Perform inspections of customer premises in order to check for possible cross-connections.Investigate customer complaints.Notify other underground utilities of excavations so they can mark the locations of their facilities.During non-working hours, receive notification of distribution emergencies requiring investigation. Upon notification, investigate and evaluate the emergency situation.Take the necessary actions to obtain emergency repair crews for distribution work at any time of day. This includes but is not limited to contacting the Utility's distribution servicemen, DPW personnel, and contractors if necessary.SPECIAL FUNCTIONS:Propose and implement procedures which will improve efficiency of Utility operations.Inspect and test private wells to determine compliance with Utility and City codes and regulations.Collect water samples from distribution system for laboratory analysis.Supervise the repair work of contractors and Department of Public Work's crews.Perform any and all duties necessary in order to quickly and efficiently complete emergency repairs and restore water service.On a rotating basis, standby to respond to emergency calls in the water distribution system. This emergency standby procedure requires the carrying of a remote paging device.Perform work of a janitorial nature in designated work areas.Complete all necessary forms and reports following established practices.As directed, assist the Department of Public Works with snow plowing operations.Ability to work irregular or extended hours.Assume the duties of the Water Utility Serviceman II in his/her absence.Regular, predictable and punctual attendance as required.Perform any and all related duties as assigned. Qualifications EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:High school diploma or equivalent.Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes and trailer & N or T-tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire.Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources D-1 Water System Operator Certification within 18 months of hire. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:Two (2) years experience in general maintenance work with knowledge of tools and equipment necessary for underground work and mechanical repairs.Must be dependable, resourceful, and able to use good judgment.Ability to follow detailed directions, work independently within scope of assignment and knowledge, and make decisions as required.Good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors.Mechanical ability.Ability to organize and maintain accurate records with or without a computer.Ability to respond to emergency work during non-working hours and a willingness to work the hours required in order to maintain the water distribution system.Ability to deal effectively with the general public.Demonstration of good character as determined through a thorough background investigation.Ability to use tact and discretion in handling City matters.PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:Standing, walking, and sitting.Stooping, kneeling, and crouching.Climbing using legs and feet, balancing, bending, and twisting.Climbing in and out of trenches, walking over un-even surfacesExposure to extreme weather conditions for extending periods of timeReaching, feeling, talking, and hearing.Far vision at 20 feet or further and near vision at 20 inches or less with glasses, if needed.Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling objects weighing 50 to 80 pounds.Handling, grasping and fingering such as to operate hydraulic controls, control objects with the hands, operate switches, work with small parts, and write.MENTAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:Ability to: a.
