In this role, you will design, fabricate, and maintain traffic and transportation signage using industry-standard software and equipment throughout the City of Raleigh. Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.Trains and leads Sign Fabricators or temporary staff in sign fabrication techniques, equipment safety, and best practicesDesign, fabricate, and repair traffic and roadway signage using software such as FlexiSIGN, Adobe Creative Suite, and CorelDRAWOperate and maintain large-format printing equipment, including Roland and Mimaki printers, plotters, and related sign-making toolsAssist in developing signage concepts and layouts based on project specifications and guidelinesReview, prioritize, and organize daily work orders to ensure deadlines and quality standards are metMonitor inventory levels of materials and supplies and recommend reordering to ensure consistent workflowDeliver signs to worksite locations, assist sign installers, and/or conduct site visits with supervisor, manger, or a sign installerMaintains detailed records of sign workPerform additional duties as required in support of departmental operations and public safety Typical QualificationsEducation and Experience:6+ months of training beyond High School Diploma; 3 to 5 years' in graphic design, sign fabrication, installation and maintenance or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substitutedLicenses or Certifications:Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire Additional InformationKnowledge:Principles and practices of graphic design and layoutTraffic and roadway signage standards (e.g., MUTCD - Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices)Operation and maintenance of large-format printing equipment (e.g., Roland printers, plotters)Materials and substrates commonly used in sign fabrication (e.g., vinyl, reflective sheeting, aluminum)Safety procedures and protocols related to sign fabrication and installationInventory control practices and basic supply chain managementFile formats and design workflows for print productionSkills:Proficient in design software including FlexiSIGN, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop), and CorelDRAWSkilled in operating large-format printers, laminators, cutters, and plottersStrong attention to detail in both design and production workEffective time management and ability to prioritize tasksBasic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and maintaining equipmentCompetency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and specificationsStrong communication skills for coordinating with team members and departmentsAbilities:Ability to follow technical instructions and design specifications accuratelyAbility to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlinesAbility to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively in a team settingAbility to maintain organized records of jobs, inventory, and maintenance logsAbility to lift and move materials and signage (within standard physical requirements)Ability to adapt to new technologies, processes, and design trendsADA and Other Requirements:Work Environment and Physical Effort:Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Work Environment:Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic) and in or around vehicles.
