Position Type: Parks, Recreation & Community Services - SeasonalDate Posted: 1/5/2026Location: Fleetwood-Jourdain CenterDate Available: 05/27/2026Closing Date: 05/01/2026 SUMMARY Under the direction of the Program Coordinator and/or designee, Camp Counselors are responsible for supervising campers and ensuring their safety, development, and general well-being. Camp Counselors will maintain a schedule and facilitate lesson plans for daily activities. Also organize and lead various small and large group activities and prepare recreational facilities for campers use. Counselors shall monitor recreational activities to ensure that activities are safe and appropriate and are responsible for the development and coordination of assigned youth or teen day camps and facility supervision. As a member of the FJCC Summer Staff, you are expected to work in cooperation with ALL camp and building staff. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES PRE-CAMP Complete all required paperwork by assigned deadlines Complete all required trainings and certifications (Must attend Mandatory Director Training or Complete Prior to Camp) Review and enforce updated policies and procedures Assist with staff onboarding, training, and orientation Communicate proactively with Program Coordinator regarding staffing, scheduling, and program needs Establish positive working relationships with camp and building staff ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Ensure compliance with all Camp Handbook guidelines, policies, and procedures Oversee daily camp operations, schedules, and program flow Supervise, support, and evaluate Assistant Directors and Camp Counselors Provide leadership in group supervision with focus on safety, health, behavior management, camper engagement, and skill development Train, mentor, and support camp staff to ensure effective performance and staff morale Plan, coordinate, and oversee indoor and outdoor recreational activities Ensure age-appropriate programming in arts and crafts, sports, games, special events, and field trips Promote camper participation and foster an inclusive, positive camp culture Serve as a role model and uphold professional behavior at all times Oversee camper records, attendance, incident reports, and medical documentation Ensure staff awareness of camper medical needs and emergency procedures Address behavioral, staff, or program concerns promptly and professionally Collaborate with staff and leadership to resolve issues related to facilities, programming, and camper needs Provide excellent customer service and act as a point of contact for parents/guardians Ensure all accidents, incidents, and injuries are documented and reported immediately Monitor staff well-being and address concerns related to health, exhaustion, or performance Enforce camp rules and policies consistently and fairly Oversee inventory, maintenance, and care of equipment and supplies Demonstrate sound judgment, leadership, and accountability Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator or designee MARGINAL FUNCTIONS Knowledge of basic computer programs, including Word, Excel and Internet. HOURS Typically 7:00am-3pm or 10am-6pm Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS Minimum age of 21 yrs. Old Completion of 12th grade by the start of camp Strong interest, maturity and judgment in working with children in an outdoor setting Knowledge and experience in camp related activities preferred Possess the ability to work as a team member with other counselors and senior staff members Responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, patient and willing to learn PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK Ability to work primarily indoors and is occasionally subject to outdoor environmental conditions - no effective protection from the weather conditions or temperature changes. The employee performs tasks outdoors related to recreational programs, weather can be hot in the summer, etc., while in the fall and spring can be cool/cold. Employee should have the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly, in addition to the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Have the ability to lift, reach handle, finger, kneel, bend, stand for long periods of time, talk, hear, feel, smell, climb, maintain balance, stoop, crouch, crawl, and see the nature of the object by the eye. There are no environmental hazards associated with this classification. Chosen candidates will be required to provide proof of licenses, certifications, and education required for this position.
