These benefits are available after just one full day of employment.LOCATION2413 West Maple AvenueFlint, MI 48507-3493ROLE AND ESSENTIAL DUTIESThe transportation safety trainer is responsible for ensuring the proper safety training of all transportation employees. Responsible for assisting the transportation department in programs designed to promote the safety of students while they are being transported on school buses throughout the Genesee County area. Utilize "Buster," the robotic school bus, to provide grade-level appropriate instruction to students. Drive a school bus or work as an aide on a school bus as needed. Provide office support as needed. Move buses for repairs or replace disabled buses as directed by the director or the supervisors.Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to): Ensure the proper safety training of all transportation employees including, but not limited to:* Safe operation of wheel chair liftsSafe and proper procedures to secure the wheelchairs to the floor tracking and shoulder strap systems* Manual operation of the wheelchair lift* Cleaning and care of the bus seats, floor and other equipment* Storage of cleaning supplies, unused tie downs/straps and other items needed * Installation and securement of all types of child safety seats, including those for younger students* Proper use of student restraining devices such as safety vests and positioning belts.* Safety issues and proper medical procedures specific to the population of students served by the intermediate school district.Assist the transportation department in programs designed to promote the safety of students while they are being transported on school buses throughout the Genesee County area.Utilize "Buster", the robotic school bus, to provide grade-level appropriate instruction to students.Must be able to drive a school bus in accordance with district standards and the State of Michigan traffic ordinances to ensure that students are transported in a safe and efficient manner as described in the bus driver's job description.Provide a standardized safety curriculum for training all transportation employees.Assist transportation teams with the setup of the buses to ensure that transportation best practices are implemented.Observe transportation teams to ensure safety guidelines are followed while loading and securing wheelchairs, and redirect as needed.Utilize the robotic school bus to instruct students in the proper procedures for boarding and exiting the bus, as well as expectations for student behavior.Ensure the proper care and maintenance of the robotic bus and the vehicle assigned to transport it.Possess the ability to properly mark wheelchairs so they are safely secured to the bus tracking system without doing damage to the chair.Provide office support such as answering telephones and using the base radio as requested by the director and/or supervisors.Consistently models Win-Win leadership.Other Duties: Work with the director of transportation and transportation supervisors to ensure the safe pick up and drop off of students at designated locations.Performs other related duties in the department as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSEducation: High school diploma or equivalent required. Ability to secure and maintain required licenses and certifications through the State of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Education. Ability to pass an annual physical examination and required drug test. Valid Michigan Driver's license required with no points preferred. Maintain a personal telephone to ensure communication with district personnel. Ability to participate in and successfully complete training in first aid, cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bloodborne pathogen, behavior management and hazardous materials training required. Other required training may include oral and tracheal suctioning, crisis prevention intervention and Diastat. Ability to participate in and successfully complete 18-hour commercial driver's license (CDL) training provided by the intermediate school district. Ability to maintain commercial driver's license and participate in additional classes/training as requested by the director or supervisors. Certified car seat technician training preferred.Experience:Prefer candidates with a commercial driver's license (CDL) with a minimum "B" classification, "P" passenger, "S" school bus and air brake endorsements and experience transporting special education students. Five years' experience training adults in school bus safety and the use of medical equipment specific to the population of students served by the intermediate school district.Skills/Other:Maintains a positive working relationship with transportation staff, parents/guardians and school staff. Demonstrates a working knowledge of the Michigan vehicle code and school bus safety policies and procedures. Demonstrated physical stamina necessary for assisting with lifting and kneeling and reaching while maintaining personal balance and stability and performing the essential job duties. Ability to work a flexible workday and work week. Strong teamwork, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills. Discretion with confidential information. Exercises good judgment and makes decisions in accordance with the State of Michigan vehicle code, CDL requirements, board policies and administrative guidelines. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position.
