Job Title: Summer Camp Educator Job Classification: Seasonal, FT, NonexemptReports to: Summer Camp Site Director & Assistant Site Director Position Objective: Camp Educators oversee the general success and safety of camp groups by implementing weekly science curriculums designed for PreK-8th grade children. While coordinating with Camp Counselors, Camp Volunteers, and Camp leadership, educators are responsible to plan daily schedules, lead educational activities, and manage the group and classroom environment. Qualifications Required Desired2+ years' experience or study in education, science, or related field Previous experience teaching in a formal or informal education or camp settingMotivation and desire to encourage and model critical thinking and scientific discoveryExperience developing fun, informal group games and activities for groups of up to 18 campers Focus on physical and emotional safety and well-being Excellent communication skillsAbility to work well with others Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure with a positive attitude and creative problem-solving skillsAbility to spend the day actively engaging the campers following pre-written outlinesAvailability to work 5-8 full weeks of summer consisting of 11 weeks between May 26 - August 21Must be able to be on their feet for up to 6 hours at a time, covering distances of up to one mile over varying terrains, be able to lift 25 poundsAbility to work outside in heat and humidity; some camps occur in an outdoor classroom and all camps spend time outdoorsBi-lingual Proficiency Demonstrated interest and background in natural sciences and/or technologyExperience working with youth from different backgrounds and abilitiesFor technology-based camps:Programming in JavaScriptGame ModdingRobotics building and programming including LEGO Robotics platformsResponsibilitiesLead hands-on informal science activities for campersTopics including nature discovery, tinkering, space, and animal behavior/careFacilitate curriculum written by year-round staff for 3 - 4 hours of each camp dayLead informal group games, songs, and skitsAct as point of contact between caretakers, Site Directors, and full-time Museum staffProvide caretakers appropriate feedback at camper pick-up and drop-off to ensure successful camp experienceMaintain accurate and timely program records such as camper documentation and daily program summaries Work closely with Site Directors, Camp Counselors, volunteers, and year-round Museum staff to maintain safety and well-being for up to 18 campers at a timeDemonstrate compassion and empathy while utilizing positive behavior techniques to ensure campers with diverse needs and backgrounds follow safety and community guidelinesTraveling to and from the camp space and other campus locationsOversee safe and efficient trips to and from bathroomsCommunicate issues to camp leadership and team in a timely mannerBe aware of and implement Museum policiesGeneral classroom and materials managementDesign and scheduling of individual camp activitiesSet up activities and clean up the classroom before and after the camp dayMonitor classroom supplies and request replenishments when neededEvaluate program for feasibility and effectiveness & communicate issues to camp staff and curriculum writersAttend scheduled staff meetings and trainingsFacilitate daily team meetings with Counselors to outline the day's activities, discuss group management plans, address emergent issuesTrainingsVirtual Trainings - 2 weekday evenings a week throughout MayGeneral Camp Orientation - May 16 - 17Topics Trainings - evenings late May - early JuneCamp Curiosity Orientation - June 13Review all written and virtual training materials Mid-Summer evaluation materialsRepresent the museum in a professional manner during interactions and while out on the Museum floorAdditional job-related duties as assignedImportant Note - Camp Staff will not work the entire summer schedule or have to work consecutive weeks. Staff will be required to work a total of 5 - 8 full weeks throughout the summer season (May 26-August 21). Applicants will be asked to detail their summer availability during the interview process, and preference will be given to those able to work more weeks. Staff Oversight: None
